Chapter 3 - THE TRUST

The attack stopped being the biggest problem.

Police documented what Margaret had done.

I chose not to decide immediately whether I wanted charges pursued beyond the report.

Not because I forgave her.

Because I had just learned she might be my biological mother and I refused to let emotional shock dictate every next move.

Daniel supported that.

Margaret did not ask me to forgive her.

That mattered.

She sat across from me the next morning in attorney Lena Ortiz’s office.

No burgundy blouse.

No jewelry.

No authority.

Just a sixty-year-old woman with swollen eyes.

“I thought you were sleeping with Richard.”

“I know.”

“That does not excuse what I did.”

“No.”

“I’m sorry.”

I believed she meant it.

I did not say it was okay.

It wasn’t.

Lena opened the trust file.

Evelyn created the Emily Mercer Trust twenty-seven years earlier.

Beneficiary:

Emily Margaret Mercer.

Born to Margaret Mercer.

Father listed as confidential.

Trustee:

Thomas Reed.

Successor trustee:

Richard Hale.

I stared.

“My adoptive father was trustee?”

“Yes,” Lena said.

“He never told me.”

“He may have intended to when you turned thirty-five. That is the primary distribution age.”

“Why thirty-five?”

“Evelyn’s instruction.”

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Control from beyond the grave.

Thomas died two years earlier.

That made Richard successor trustee.

Which explained why he contacted me.

But not the forged affair evidence.

Someone wanted Margaret to think Richard and I were involved.

Someone also tried to transfer trust assets using my identity.

The timing was too neat.

Daniel asked:

“Who benefits if Emma looks like a manipulative mistress trying to get money from Richard?”

Lena answered:

“Richard, possibly.”

Richard did not react.

“Explain.”

“If Emma can be framed as coercing or romantically manipulating the trustee, any suspicious transfers could be blamed on her.”

Richard leaned back.

“I invited the investigation.”

“After the transfer attempt failed.”

Good point.

Then Margaret said:

“I got the messages from Richard’s number.”

Richard handed over his phone.

Different number.

The fake texts came from a masked forwarding service.

The photographs were professional.

Someone planned both.

Then Lena pulled the attempted transfer authorization.

Three hundred fifty thousand dollars.

Destination:

Mercer Family Holdings LLC.

Margaret went still.

“That’s mine.”

“What?”

“My family company.”

She looked at Richard.

“My brother Paul manages it.”

There it was.

Another player.

Paul Mercer.

Margaret’s younger brother.

He had inherited most of Evelyn’s remaining estate and managed the family investment company.

According to Margaret, Paul had spent decades telling her Evelyn “made difficult choices” to protect the family name.

Daniel asked:

“Did Paul know about Emma?”

Margaret’s face changed.

“He knew there was a baby.”

“Did he know she lived?”

“I don’t know.”

Then Richard said:

“Yes.”

Everyone turned.

Richard continued:

“Paul signed the adoption reimbursement paperwork.”

Margaret stared at her brother’s name on the copied form.

And whispered:

“He knew my daughter was alive for twenty-seven years.”
