Chapter 15 - THE MOTHER WHO TAUGHT HIM HOW TO LIE
Emily met Linda in Maya’s office with both attorneys present.
Linda brought three boxes of Daniel’s childhood records, consulting invoices, and correspondence with Helen. She was ready to testify—but she wanted the trust to preserve her housing license.
“You are asking for protection from the person you helped attack me,” Emily said.
“Yes.”
“Why should I trust you?”
“You shouldn’t.” Linda’s voice shook. “Verify everything.”
It was the first honest answer she had given.
Linda admitted she taught Daniel that documents could be corrected after signing. When he was seventeen, she used his name on a credit application. Years later, he began using hers. They called it helping family.
The first fraudulent card bought groceries during a desperate year. Linda repaid it and told Daniel no harm remained. The second paid property taxes. By the fifth, necessity had become habit and habit had become entitlement.
“He watched rules bend whenever I was afraid,” Linda said. “I taught him fear was permission.”
Emily thought of the wedding papers. Daniel had not invented his methods alone, but adulthood gave him countless chances to reject them. Origin explained technique. It did not erase choice.
“I made fraud sound like loyalty,” she said. “Then I acted shocked when he used it against me.”
In the boxes, Maya found Daniel’s original proposal to Linda. He would marry Emily, establish residence at Linda’s home, trigger the ninety-day clause, and restore Linda as trustee. In exchange, Linda would grant him development rights.
Linda had signed.
She was not merely manipulated. She was a participant who lost control of the conspiracy.
Emily stood. “You knew before the wedding.”
“I knew he planned to persuade you to step aside. I did not know about forged signatures or the development.”
“You demanded rent because you wanted a paper trail.”
Linda looked down. “Yes.”
The confession reopened the wound of the kitchen more sharply than Daniel’s silence. Linda’s humiliation had been purposeful.
Emily did not promise to preserve her housing. She promised only that the trust council would evaluate the license under the same rules applied to everyone.
Linda accepted.
The boxes contained one final surprise: a prenuptial agreement Daniel prepared but never showed Emily. It waived his rights to her separate property while granting DT Pacific a consulting fee if the villa changed trusteeship.
His own unsigned draft demonstrated he knew marriage gave him no legitimate claim.
Everything afterward was deliberate evasion.
Detective Ortiz obtained arrest warrants for identity theft, loan fraud, evidence tampering, and conspiracy. Daniel disappeared before they reached his office.
His phone last connected near the Malibu villa.
