Chapter 1 - THE ANNIVERSARY CAKE ON THE MARBLE COUNTER

Evelyn Carter had carried the anniversary cake up the stairs because Ryan was late.
That was all.
At least, that was what every guest downstairs believed.
The mansion was full.
White roses framed the staircase.
Silver ribbons hung from the balcony rail.
Crystal glasses caught the warm light from the chandeliers.
A jazz trio played near the sunroom while forty-seven guests waited for Evelyn and Ryan Carter to cut the cake celebrating fifteen years of marriage.
Fifteen years.
Evelyn had repeated the number to herself all evening as if saying it enough times might make the day feel real.
She wore a dark blue dress Ryan once said made her eyes look almost silver.
He had not noticed it tonight.
He had spent most of the party answering calls, disappearing into the library, checking his watch, and telling people the company’s pending acquisition was “nearly done.”
Then he vanished upstairs.
Evelyn waited seven minutes.
Then ten.
At twelve, Victoria Carter looked toward the staircase.
“Go get him.”
Evelyn had been about to anyway.
She lifted the small anniversary cake from the dessert table.
Not the main cake.
A private one.
Vanilla with lemon cream.
The same flavor they had served at their wedding.
Ryan had forgotten that detail.
Evelyn had not.
She climbed the stairs.
Past framed family photographs.
Past a vase of white orchids.
Past the hallway where Ryan had kissed her forehead that morning and said:
“Tonight is about us.”
The master suite door stood open.
So did the bathroom door.
Steam drifted into the bedroom.
Evelyn smiled faintly.
Of course.
Ryan had complained all week about his shoulder and had recently decided the Jacuzzi was “the only thing in the house that relaxed him.”
She stepped inside.
“Ryan?”
No answer.
She moved toward the bathroom.
Cake balanced carefully in both hands.
Then stopped.
Ryan was inside the Jacuzzi.
So was Madison Blake.
Madison’s blonde hair was wet at the ends.
Her bare shoulders rose above the water.
Ryan’s hand was behind her neck.
Their mouths were together.
Not ambiguous.
Not friendly.
Not accidental.
Evelyn froze.
For one impossible second, the cake remained perfectly level.
Ryan saw her first.
His eyes opened.
He pulled away from Madison so quickly water splashed against the marble.
“Evelyn.”
Madison turned.
Her face changed.
No smugness.
No practiced confidence.
Pure panic.
Evelyn stared.
The bathroom seemed too bright.
That was what she would remember later.
The cruel brightness of it.
Gold fixtures.
White marble.
Candles reflected in the mirror.
Her anniversary flowers placed beside the sink.
Ryan’s tuxedo jacket folded over a chair.
Madison’s red evening dress hanging near the vanity.
Everything arranged around betrayal as if the room had been prepared for it.
Evelyn looked at Ryan.
Then Madison.
Then the cake.
Something inside her hurt so sharply she almost dropped it.
Instead she smiled.
Cold.
Small.
“Happy anniversary.”
Ryan went pale.
“Evelyn, wait.”
He climbed out of the Jacuzzi and reached for the robe hanging beside him.
“Evelyn, wait! I can explain!”
She almost laughed.
Of course he could.
Men like Ryan always had language ready.
Bad timing.
Misunderstanding.
Stress.
Loneliness.
A mistake.
Too much champagne.
Fifteen years reduced to vocabulary.
Footsteps sounded in the hallway.
Several guests had followed Evelyn upstairs when Ryan failed to appear.
Victoria reached the doorway first.
Sixty-one.
Silver-blonde hair.
Black evening suit.
Stern even when smiling.
She looked into the bathroom.
Stopped.
“Ryan?!”
The word cracked.
More guests appeared behind her.
Someone gasped.
A woman covered her mouth.
One of Ryan’s senior vice presidents turned away immediately.
Madison moved deeper into the water.
Her face burned.
“Can everyone leave?”
No one moved.
Ryan tied the robe.
“Mom.”
Victoria stared at him.
Then at Madison.
Her expression was horror.
Real.
Evelyn saw that.
Whatever else Victoria knew or did not know, this part had surprised her.
Good to know.
Ryan turned back to Evelyn.
“Please.”
Evelyn walked past him.
He stared.
She placed the anniversary cake on the marble counter.
Perfectly centered between two champagne glasses.
Ryan watched her.
That frightened him.
Not the guests.
Not Victoria.
Her silence.
“Say something.”
Evelyn adjusted the cake plate.
Then slowly turned.
“You really think she’s why I came up here?”
Ryan’s expression changed.
Barely.
But Evelyn saw it.
The affair had humiliated him.
That sentence scared him.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn stepped closer.
The guests in the doorway went silent.
“I found the forged signatures.”
Ryan froze.
Madison looked at him.
Evelyn continued.
“The hidden accounts.”
His breathing changed.
“And the documents you prepared in my name.”
Madison’s face sharpened.
“What is she talking about?”
Ryan did not answer.
That was answer enough for someone.
Maybe not the room.
Not yet.
He stepped toward Evelyn.
Too fast.
His hand closed around her wrist.
“What did you do?”
Evelyn looked down.
At his fingers.
Then up at him.
“Let go.”
His grip tightened for one second.
Then Evelyn pulled hard and tore her hand free.
Her eyes remained calm.
“You still think your affair is the problem?”
Ryan stared at her.
Whatever arrogance had survived the first shock disappeared.
Evelyn stepped closer.
Her voice dropped.
“You should get dressed, Ryan.”
He froze.
“Why?”
Evelyn looked toward the bathroom door.
Then back at him.
Ryan’s face drained completely of color.
May you like
Madison stared between them.
And Chapter One ended before anyone learned what was waiting downstairs.
