Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN IN THE DOORWAY

I had not planned to storm into Vanessa’s house that afternoon.

I had planned to sit in the rental car across the street, watch the front windows, and wait for my lawyer to call back about the emergency petition we filed that morning.

Then I heard Lily scream.

The sound came through the open front door and traveled down the entry hallway like something alive. By the time my body caught up to my mind, I was already inside the upscale suburban house my sister had purchased with money she claimed came from “smart investments.”

The living room opened to my right.

Lily was on the carpet, sobbing so hard I could hear the panic scraping in her throat. Vanessa had one fist twisted in the loose back of Lily’s pale-pink cardigan and was dragging her several feet across the rug like she was hauling luggage, not a child.

“STOP CRYING AND OBEY ME!”

Lily clawed at the carpet and reached toward the open doorway.

Everything in me went white-hot.

I charged forward, ripped Vanessa’s hand away, and scooped Lily behind me. The little girl collided against my back, shaking hard enough for me to feel it through my blouse.

“GET YOUR HANDS OFF THAT CHILD!”

Vanessa stared at me, stunned for less than a second. Then her face hardened with that familiar, arrogant kind of fury I had known since childhood.

She lunged.

Her hand caught my shoulder first. Then she slapped me hard enough to snap my head sideways.

“MY FAMILY IS NONE OF YOUR DAMN BUSINESS!”

Lily screamed behind me.

I turned slowly back toward Vanessa. My cheek was burning, but it was nothing compared to what it felt like to see Lily—my Lily—huddled behind me in fear.

My hand moved before I fully thought.

The slap cracked across Vanessa’s face.

Then I grabbed both of her upper arms and forced her back a step.

“You have no idea who you just touched.”

For the first time, Vanessa froze.

A door deeper inside the house flew open.

Ashley rushed into the room, ready to shout about something, but the moment she saw me, she stopped so hard she nearly stumbled.

Her face drained of color.

Her eyes widened.

“Oh my God… you?!”

She pointed at me with a shaking hand.

Vanessa turned toward her, confused now instead of furious. Lily clung tighter behind me, her tiny fingers digging into my sides.

Ashley backed into the wall, still staring.

“MOM… SHE’S THE—”

The sentence broke in her throat.

Vanessa’s expression changed. Not into guilt. Not yet.

Into fear.

And before either of them could recover, Lily peered around my arm, stared up into my face, and whispered the one question that made every adult in the room stop breathing.

“Why do I look like you?”
