Chapter 7 - THE DEAL CLAIRE WOULD NOT BUY
Evan offered cooperation in exchange for Claire supporting probation and shared custody.
He would authenticate Darlene's ledger, identify the shell companies, and admit the wire request was created using Claire's phone. In return, he wanted Claire to describe the shove as panic rather than intention.
“Was it panic?” Maya asked him.
“I didn't mean for her water to break.”
“That wasn't the question.”
He had no answer.
Claire rejected the deal.
“He is selling me the truth he owes the police,” she said. “He doesn't get to price it in access to our daughters.”
The decision cost Claire. Rejecting the offer meant prosecutors might take longer to secure Darlene's records. It also meant Evan could stop cooperating and continue fighting in family court.
Maya asked whether Claire wanted time.
“If I trade the girls for evidence,” Claire said, “I teach him the same lesson he learned from his mother—that every boundary has a price.”
Evan eventually cooperated without her promise. His own attorney explained that documents already tied him to the fraud and assault. Waiting would only make Darlene's version more persuasive.
He admitted knowing his mother had diverted foundation funds, though he claimed he believed she would repay them. He admitted giving Brooke Claire's phone passcode. He admitted dragging Claire to the table and pushing her.
His testimony exposed Darlene's planning, but it also confirmed his own choices.
Darlene responded with a sworn declaration blaming Evan entirely. She said her son became violent after Claire rejected an investment they both previously approved. She described herself as an elderly mother trying to calm him and claimed the ambulance condition was “sarcastic frustration.”
Brooke aligned with whichever story offered her the safest exit. First she supported Darlene. Then she offered prosecutors the original phone video in exchange for immunity.
There was a problem.
Brooke had deleted the file in the kitchen.
She claimed a second copy automatically uploaded to a private editing account, but she would reveal the password only after receiving a written agreement.
Prosecutors refused full immunity. They offered consideration for complete and truthful cooperation.
Brooke waited two days.
Then the account was remotely erased.
Login records showed the deletion came from Darlene's attorney's office.
The attorney denied involvement and produced hallway footage showing Darlene had been alone in the conference room with his laptop for nine minutes.
Forensic specialists recovered one fragment from the deleted video.
It showed Darlene turning toward Evan before he grabbed Claire.
“If she falls,” Darlene said, “use her face to unlock the phone before the ambulance comes.”
The fragment also captured Brooke asking whether a premature delivery would “make Claire easier to handle.” Darlene answered that hospitals documented emotional instability after difficult births.

His silence no longer helped him claim ignorance. It showed he heard the plan before choosing to put his hands on Claire.
