Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO NEEDED ME GONE

Daniel watched the footage three times.

Not because he doubted it.

Because he was trying to understand how badly he had misread the room.

Patricia stood near the doorway with both hands trembling.

Finally, Daniel said:

“Why?”

She lifted her chin.

“She is not family.”

I laughed.

“That’s your explanation?”

“You overstep.”

“I pulled a baby out of a tub.”

“You interfere constantly.”

“With what?”

“With how Sophie is raised.”

Daniel stepped between us.

“Mom.”

She turned toward him.

“I am trying to protect your daughter.”

“From Emily?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Patricia looked at me.

Then away.

Daniel noticed.

“What did you mean when you said she had to be gone tonight?”

“I never said gone.”

“It’s on video.”

Silence.

He called the police.

Patricia stared at him like he had betrayed blood itself.

“You are calling police on your mother?”

“You staged this.”

“For you.”

That sentence broke something in him.

Police came.

Statements were taken.

The physical assault was documented.

So was the planned setup.

I told officers I had struck Patricia once only after she attacked me and moved toward Sophie.

Daniel admitted he struck me because he believed his mother without asking.

He did not try to make himself look better.

That mattered.

The officers separated Patricia from the house that night.

Temporary order.

No contact with me.

No unsupervised contact with Sophie.

Then Daniel came to the guest room where I was packing.

“You’re leaving?”

“Yes.”

“Emily—”

“You hit me.”

“I know.”

“You didn’t ask one question.”

“I know.”

“You looked at your mother’s face and decided that was enough.”

He nodded.

No excuses.

Good.

Then he said:

“I don’t want you to stay because I deserve forgiveness. I want you to stay because Sophie trusts you, and because I need to understand what my mother was trying to do.”

I zipped my bag.

“That is not my problem.”

“No.”

“But?”

“But I think it may involve you.”

I stopped.

He handed me a folder police found in Patricia’s car.

My name was on the front.

EMILY PARKER.

Inside:

my employment application,

my previous addresses,

my college information,

photographs of me entering the house,

screenshots of my social media,

and one copy of a birth certificate.

Not mine.

A baby girl named:

SOPHIA REED.

Born twenty-six years earlier.

Mother:

CAROLINE REED.

I stared.

“My mother’s name was Caroline.”

Daniel looked at me.

“I know.”

“How?”

“It was in your background check.”

“Why does your mother have this?”

He turned the page.

There was a handwritten note from Patricia.

If Emily learns who Caroline was, everything changes.

My stomach dropped.

“Who was my mother to your family?”

Daniel sat down slowly.

May you like

Then answered:

“She was my father’s first wife.”
