Chapter 5 - THE DESTINATION THAT DIDN'T EXIST

The ticket made Paige look like Evelyn’s accomplice.

Security footage at Union Station showed a woman with Paige’s height wearing a cap and using the ticket to board a train toward Chicago. Her face remained turned away from every camera. Evelyn’s credit card paid for the purchase.

Marcus issued no public statement. He allowed the implication to spread: Evelyn hired her own double, staged a false commitment video, then accused her husband of creating it.

“He built a counterfeit and gave me ownership of it,” Evelyn said.

Mara followed the payment. The ticket had been bought through Evelyn’s card number, but the transaction used a travel profile controlled by Marcus’s executive office. The profile logged in from the estate Wi-Fi twenty minutes after police arrived in the rain.

Marcus claimed anyone at Vale House could have used it.

The dark ambulance offered a harder trail.

Its navigation unit had been reset, but the battery-management system retained time-stamped charging locations. It had never visited Hawthorne Ridge Behavioral Center. For three nights before the attempted transfer, it charged at a private hangar near Leesburg Executive Airport.

A Gulfstream registered to a Northstar subsidiary had filed a medical flight plan from Leesburg to a private clinic in the Cayman Islands. The passenger manifest listed Evelyn under a misspelled name. The flight was scheduled for ninety minutes after the gurney left Vale House.

Hawthorne Ridge was not the destination.

It was the story Marcus intended to give American courts after Evelyn disappeared beyond their immediate reach.

The Cayman clinic was owned through a chain of companies ending at Dr. Sloane’s brother. Its admission agreement permitted indefinite treatment for “high-risk delusional disorders” and recognized foreign guardianship certifications. No public patient registry existed.

“If the police had arrived ten minutes later…” Mara began.

Evelyn looked at the ceiling above her rehabilitation bed. “I would have become a medical privacy problem in another country.”

The older fake medic, Trent Barlow, refused to cooperate. Evan Holt did.

Evan admitted that Marcus paid him to restrain Evelyn and bring her to the hangar. Dr. Sloane provided the sedatives. Marcus instructed them to use enough medication to keep her unconscious through customs and told them that, if she stopped breathing, the private jet carried resuscitation equipment.

“He never said we should kill her,” Evan insisted.

“He just made her survival your problem,” Detective Cross replied.

Evan identified Paige as the woman in the simulation video. He also described a second rehearsal in which Marcus practiced answering questions about Evelyn’s suicidal behavior. Evan’s testimony was valuable, but he had accepted money and now wanted leniency. Prosecutors needed independent corroboration.

The briefcase provided it.

One sedative kit carried Dr. Sloane’s fingerprints beneath its tamper seal. The cash bands traced to a withdrawal from Marcus’s private account. Fibers inside the case matched the restraint straps placed on Evelyn. A printer defect linked the false court order to a machine in Sloane’s clinic.

Marcus was arrested for attempted abduction, conspiracy, forgery, and unlawful possession of controlled drugs.

He posted a secured bond after surrendering his passport and remained under electronic monitoring. His lawyers attacked Evan as a criminal inventing a story. They claimed the flight plan was a contingency for legitimate specialty care and that Marcus believed every judicial and medical document to be authentic.

Then Paige contacted Mara.

She called from a borrowed phone and whispered that she had not boarded the train. Marcus’s security chief had ordered her to disappear and promised a new identity. Paige fled from the escort in the station restroom.

“I’ll testify,” she said. “But he has someone inside the trust.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know. I heard Marcus say the neutral vote was already purchased.”

The line crackled.

“Where are you?” Mara asked.

Paige gave an address near Alexandria.

Police found the borrowed phone in an alley behind the building.

Paige was gone.

On its screen was a photograph she had taken before fleeing the simulation suite.

It showed Marcus, Dr. Sloane, and Gabriel Shaw standing together beside Evelyn’s forged consent form.
