Chapter 2 - WHAT THE CAMERA SAW

The camera was not installed because Nora suspected murder.

That came later.

Three weeks earlier, cash began disappearing from the kitchen drawer.

Small amounts.

Twenty dollars.

Forty.

Once, a hundred.

Daniel assumed contractors working on the nursery had taken it.

Nora refused to accuse anyone without evidence.

So she bought a tiny motion-activated camera and placed it inside a decorative shelf above the pantry door.

It captured the kitchen.

The breakfast table.

The tea cabinet.

And the counter where Vivian had spent those seven minutes wiping things down.

Detective Harris obtained the storage card under Nora’s written consent the next morning.

Daniel watched with him.

Lily did not.

Harris refused to put a child through that unless necessary.

The first recordings were boring.

Nora cooking.

Daniel making coffee.

Lily doing homework.

A contractor stealing forty dollars.

Case solved.

Then came the afternoon Nora collapsed.

1:14 p.m.

Nora entered the kitchen alone.

She made tea.

Sat.

Read something on her phone.

At 1:22, the door opened.

Vivian entered.

No greeting.

No surprise.

She walked directly to the table.

Nora looked up.

There was no audio.

Only video.

Vivian placed a blue folder in front of Nora.

Nora opened it.

Read.

Then shook her head.

Vivian leaned forward.

Nora stood.

Pointed toward the door.

Vivian did not leave.

She picked up Nora’s teacup.

Held it.

Set it down.

Then moved toward the counter with her back partly blocking the camera.

For six seconds, the view became unclear.

When she returned, she placed the cup back in front of Nora.

Nora did not drink immediately.

Vivian left.

Three minutes later, Nora took two sips.

Within eleven minutes, she began feeling ill.

She stood.

Dropped the cup.

Collapsed.

Then came the part that changed everything.

At 1:43, Vivian returned.

She saw Nora on the floor.

Stopped.

Looked toward the spilled tea.

Then checked the hallway.

Instead of calling 911—

she opened the trash cabinet.

Removed something small.

Put it into her purse.

Then began wiping the counter.

At 1:46, Lily entered.

Daniel watched the footage twice.

Then he vomited into a hospital trash can.

Harris said nothing.

He did not need to.

The video did not show exactly what Vivian placed in the tea.

But it showed opportunity.

Behavior.

Concealment.

And one lie.

Vivian told police she had arrived only seconds before Lily screamed.

The camera showed she had been there before Nora collapsed.

And returned after.

She had lied twice.

By noon, Vivian’s attorney arrived.

By one, she stopped answering questions.

By two, Harris obtained a warrant.

And inside Vivian’s purse, police found a torn label from a prescription bottle that did not belong to her.

The patient name had been ripped away.

The pharmacy code remained.

It belonged to Daniel Mercer.
