Chapter 3 - WHY SUNRISE MATTERED

Evelyn survived.

Barely.

The medical alert system had triggered.

A private security operator called the house.

No answer.

Then dispatched an emergency response team under the property’s standing protocol.

By the time Celeste heard vehicles outside, Evelyn was barely conscious.

Celeste tried to leave through the rear terrace.

Security stopped her.

At the hospital, doctors stabilized Evelyn.

They identified exposure to a dangerous substance but investigators avoided releasing specifics publicly.

That did not matter yet.

What mattered was the timing.

By sunrise, Celeste had said.

Attorney Mara Chen arrived before dawn.

She had represented Evelyn’s late father.

Then Evelyn herself.

Mara sat beside the hospital bed with a laptop and a face that meant somebody had made a serious mistake.

“Your aunt filed something yesterday.”

Evelyn’s voice was weak.

“What?”

“A contingent transfer notice.”

“For what?”

“The Ashcroft Legacy Trust.”

Evelyn stared.

She was twenty-nine.

Only child.

Only grandchild.

Primary beneficiary of a family trust worth nearly eighty million dollars.

She did not receive unrestricted control until thirty.

Her birthday was in six weeks.

Until then, the trust had a temporary succession provision if Evelyn died or became medically incapacitated.

Who became interim protector?

Celeste.

Evelyn whispered:

“By sunrise.”

Mara nodded.

“If you died tonight, she could petition immediately for temporary control.”

“Not ownership.”

“No.”

“But enough control to move things.”

“Yes.”

That was the difference between greed and strategy.

Celeste did not need to inherit everything.

She only needed temporary authority long enough to change what could still be changed.
