Chapter 4 - THE MONEY UNDER HER NAME

Priscilla had moved money.
Not from Corbin personally.
From Hail Residential.
Small amounts.
Consulting invoices.
Market research.
Brand strategy.
Tenant analytics.
Her own company billed Hail Residential nearly $480,000 over eighteen months.
Some work was real.
Enough to make the invoices plausible.
But almost half had no deliverables.
Corbin’s internal auditor flagged them.
Priscilla said subcontractors did the work.
No contracts.
No tax records.
Then one payment matched the date my staffing referral appeared.
Vale Strategic Consulting paid:
North Coast Genealogical Research.
$12,000.
That was how she found me.
Company money funded the search.
Then another payment:
Tessa Moore.
The temporary housekeeper.
$4,500.
Description:
event staffing.
No event.
Then cash withdrawals after the bracelet incident.
The scheme was not huge corporate theft.
It was misuse of company funds to manage a personal threat.
That distinction mattered.
Priscilla had used Corbin’s own company to investigate and frame a possible heir.
Then Corbin revealed why he had said “We need to talk.”
He had planned to confront her privately that night about the invoices.
He entered the kitchen carrying the evidence.
Instead, he found her heel on my hand.
Everything collided.
The police report changed the wedding.
Corbin canceled it the next morning.
Not postponed.
Canceled.
Priscilla moved out of the mansion.
Then she went public.
Not to newspapers.
To family.
She called Corbin’s aunts.
Board members.
Old friends.
Her story:
Belle was a manipulative maid claiming to be family after seducing Corbin emotionally.
Corbin attacked his fiancée to protect her.
I had engineered a false assault to gain leverage in probate.
Smart.
Ugly.
And because I had worked in his home, some people believed enough to ask questions.
Then came photographs.
Me and Corbin in the study late at night.
Real.
We had been reviewing Anna’s letters.
Cropped.
No attorney visible in the wider image.
Me getting into Corbin’s car.
Real.
He drove me to a DNA appointment.
Cropped.
No clinic sign.
Priscilla understood optics.
Then one board member called Corbin.
“If she’s an heir, this looks terrible.”
Exactly Priscilla’s goal.
If she could make our relationship look inappropriate, she could taint both of us.
Then she filed a civil claim.
Against Corbin.
Battery from the slap.
Wrongful termination of consulting relationship.
Defamation.
Against me:
Intentional interference with engagement.
False accusation.
Theft of confidential estate information.
The last one frightened me.
Had I taken anything?
No.
But I had photographed Edmund’s old picture of Anna before I knew who she was.
Priscilla had security footage of me holding it.
That became:
Maid searches private study for inheritance evidence.
Again.
Real fact.
False frame.
My attorney, Julia Reyes, said:
“This is what good antagonists do.”
I almost smiled.
She corrected:
“Good litigants.”
Then DNA returned.
Edmund Hail could not be tested directly through ordinary current samples because the estate sample had chain-of-custody issues.
So Corbin provided DNA.
If Anna was his half-sister, I would be his half-niece.
Result:
Strongly consistent with avuncular relationship.
Not absolute alone.
Then we found Anna’s stored medical sample from a hospital pathology archive.
Legal process.
Consent questions.
Court order.
The final kinship analysis confirmed:
Anna Carter was Edmund Hail’s biological daughter.
I was Anna’s daughter.
The biological link was settled.
The legal inheritance fight remained.
Then Priscilla made her strongest move.
She produced Anna’s renunciation letter.
My mother had written:
I reject any inheritance from Edmund Hail for myself and for any claim arising through me.
Those words were dangerous.
“For any claim arising through me.”
Julia’s face tightened.
May you like
Priscilla’s attorney argued that included me.
If the court agreed, I inherited nothing.
