Chapter 9 - HIS ACCOUNT WAS NEVER THE REWARD

The civil case settled faster than many people expected.

Not because Grant was honorable.

Because he was cornered.

The forensic records were devastating.

Every deposit into ARGENT PARTNERS was time-linked.

Every assault had corroboration.

Every attempt he made to move money after the airport showed consciousness of guilt.

In deposition, Grant tried one last defense.

He said the money changed him.

As if greed had arrived from the outside and climbed into him like a parasite.

Amelia listened for a while.

Then leaned forward and asked the question that ended everything.

“What did you do before the first deposit?”

Grant frowned.

“What?”

“The first time you hurt me,” she said. “The account hadn’t made you rich yet. So what made you raise your hand?”

He had no answer.

That was the truth, finally stripped bare.

The money did not create the cruelty.

It only removed the excuse not to show it.

Grant signed the settlement six months later.

Amelia kept the house.

Kept her separate holdings.

Kept her name.

And received the remaining evidence archives, which she locked away not because she feared them—but because she no longer wanted to live inside them.

Charles offered to make the whole story disappear from public memory.

He had that kind of power.

Amelia surprised him by saying no.

“It happened,” she said. “Pretending it didn’t is how men like him keep finding women like me.”
