Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN BESIDE THE BROKEN CHAMPAGNE TABLE

The ballroom went silent before Audrey Vance hit the floor.

Not after.

Before.

The silence came in the half-second when everyone understood Julian Vance had put both hands on his wife and shoved.

Then Audrey crashed backward into the champagne table.

Crystal shattered.

A silver ice bucket rolled beneath a chair.

Two bottles struck the floor.

Red wine splashed across the front of Audrey’s blue silk dress, soaked one shoulder, and ran in dark streaks through her brunette hair.

Someone gasped.

Someone else whispered Julian’s name.

Nobody moved.

Audrey stayed braced against the broken table for one stunned second.

Her palms hurt.

Her hip had struck the edge.

Her face burned with humiliation hotter than the wine staining her chest.

Across from her, Julian straightened his tuxedo jacket.

He did not look sorry.

Thirty-six.

Handsome.

Senior executive at Aurelia Systems.

The man half the room expected to be promoted before dessert.

The man Audrey had been married to for eight years.

He stepped toward her.

Then pulled Camilla Price closer to his side.

Camilla wore red.

Of course she did.

A fitted gown.

Perfect hair.

A smile too pleased for a woman standing six feet from another woman’s collapsed champagne table.

And on her ears—

Audrey stopped breathing.

Diamonds.

Small.

Old-cut.

Framed in white gold.

Her mother’s earrings.

The pair Audrey had searched for three days earlier.

The pair Julian had sworn he had not seen.

The pair kept in a velvet box inside the private dressing room at their Lakeview townhouse.

Audrey looked at them.

Then at her husband.

Julian’s voice was cold.

“Go home.”

Audrey did not move.

He looked down at her.

“Tonight, she belongs beside me.”

The room became even quieter.

Camilla touched one earring as if she wanted Audrey to notice.

Maybe she did.

“Maybe you should listen to your husband.”

A few executives looked away.

Others did not.

Humiliation has an audience whether the audience wants one or not.

Audrey put one hand on the broken table and stood.

Slowly.

Wine ran from her sleeve.

A strand of wet hair stuck against her cheek.

Julian looked irritated now.

As if her refusal to disappear was another inconvenience.

Audrey smoothed the ruined front of her dress.

Then said:

“No.”

Julian blinked.

“What?”

She looked at him.

Not Camilla.

Him.

“I think I’ll stay for the announcement.”

For the first time that evening, uncertainty entered Julian’s face.

He crossed the distance between them and grabbed Audrey’s wrist.

“What announcement?”

Audrey looked at his hand.

Then at him.

“Let go.”

He did.

Not immediately.

Fast enough that half the room could pretend it had not happened.

Audrey pulled her wrist free.

“The one that ends your little celebration.”

Julian’s face hardened.

Before he could answer, Malcolm Reed stepped onto the ballroom stage.

Fifty-eight.

Board chairman.

Silver hair.

Black tuxedo.

The kind of man who could silence three hundred executives without touching a microphone.

He looked toward Julian.

Then Audrey.

Then the room.

“Ladies and gentlemen.”

Everyone turned.

Julian instantly adjusted his jacket.

Camilla stepped closer to him.

Their posture changed together.

Expectation.

The rumor had circulated for weeks.

Tonight Malcolm Reed would announce Aurelia Systems’ next president of North American operations.

Julian had already accepted congratulations from two vice presidents.

Camilla had spent the cocktail hour telling people how proud she was.

Nobody asked why Julian’s wife was standing alone.

Malcolm waited until the whispers disappeared.

“Aurelia Systems has a new majority owner.”

Julian smiled.

A few people applauded early.

Malcolm continued.

“Following the completion of the recapitalization announced this afternoon, Northstar Holdings now controls fifty-eight percent of Aurelia Systems.”

The applause grew.

Julian joined it.

Confident.

Relieved.

He had spent the last month telling anyone who listened that Northstar’s investment validated the turnaround he had led.

Camilla wrapped one hand around his arm.

Malcolm did not smile.

He looked past them.

Directly at Audrey.

“Please welcome its founder…”

Julian’s hands slowed.

Audrey stepped away from the broken champagne table.

Wine still stained her dress.

Her hair was still wet.

Her mother’s earrings were still hanging from Camilla’s ears.

Malcolm’s voice carried through the ballroom.

“Ms. Audrey Vance.”

Julian stopped clapping.

Completely.

Camilla’s fingers fell from his arm.

A sound moved through the room.

Not applause.

Shock.

Audrey walked forward.

Not toward Julian.

Toward the stage.

Someone whispered:

“No way.”

Another executive stood.

Malcolm stepped aside for her.

Audrey reached the first stair.

Julian finally found his voice.

“You?”

She turned.

Looked at him.

Then at Camilla’s earrings.

Then back at Julian.

His face had gone pale.

Camilla no longer looked smug.

Audrey said nothing.

She did not explain Northstar.

She did not explain the fifty-eight percent.

She did not explain why Malcolm knew.

She did not explain what would happen to Julian’s position.

She did not explain why Camilla wearing those earrings had just made the night far more dangerous for both of them than either understood.

May you like

She only looked at the husband who had told her to go home.

And for the first time in eight years, Julian realized he had no idea who his wife had become.
