Chapter 1 - THE SECOND BLINKArthur Wren believed silence belonged to the person who could fill it.

For seven months, he had spoken over his wife to physicians, attorneys, nurses, and visitors. He decided when Martha was tired. He decided when she was confused. He explained that the long gray hair she once wore proudly had become too difficult to maintain, though he refused every nurse who offered to cut or braid it.
Tonight, he used it as a handle.
Arthur stormed into the grand living room of Wren House and seized the back of Martha’s motorized chair. Without warning, he ripped it away from the wall.
The chair rolled hard across polished marble.
Martha’s motionless body rocked against the side supports. Her hands remained curled on the padded rests. Her legs did not move. She could not lift her head when momentum pulled it forward.
Arthur slammed the brakes.
The chair stopped so violently that Martha’s chest strap caught her weight. Before her head settled, Arthur grabbed a fistful of her hair and yanked backward.
Pain burned across her scalp and down the rigid muscles of her neck.
He leaned into her face.
“Look at you!” he shouted. “Completely useless!”
Martha could not raise a hand.
She could not turn away.
The brainstem stroke had left her unable to speak, swallow normally, or move anything below her eyes. Arthur told everyone that she understood almost nothing. He had repeated it so often that people began lowering their voices around her, as if awareness were something she might catch if they spoke too clearly.
Footsteps crossed the hallway.
Vanessa Cole entered wearing a fitted ivory dress and a smug smile. She had once been Martha’s executive assistant. Now she spent most nights in the bedroom at the east end of the house.
Arthur kept Martha’s head pulled back and dragged Vanessa directly in front of her.
Vanessa placed one hand on his chest. The diamond bracelet on her wrist had belonged to Martha’s mother.
Arthur pointed at Vanessa while gripping Martha’s hair.
“Tonight, you’re going to a state nursing home.”
He pushed Martha’s head against the chair.
“And she gets everything.”
Vanessa laughed softly.
Martha’s eyes remained still and unreadable.
Arthur put one arm around Vanessa and kissed her in front of his wife. Afterward, Vanessa looked directly down at Martha with a victorious smile.
“Don’t worry,” she said. “I’ll take good care of your house.”
Arthur laughed.
Martha did not move.
Behind them, the mansion’s evening lights reflected in the black windows. No staff remained in the room. Arthur had dismissed the night nurse two hours early and told the security company that Martha’s transfer required privacy.
He bent toward her again.
“What are you going to do about it?”
Silence.
Then Martha slowly blinked once.
Arthur frowned.
She blinked a second time.
Vanessa’s smile faded slightly.
A loud electronic locking sound echoed through the mansion.
Every exterior door locked at once.
Arthur spun around. Vanessa jumped and clutched his arm.
“What the hell was that?” he demanded.
Martha remained perfectly calm.
Arthur pulled out his phone.
He looked at the screen and froze.
His eyes widened.
Vanessa leaned toward the phone. Her smile disappeared.
Arthur slowly turned back toward the wife he believed could neither understand nor answer him.

Martha gave him the faintest, coldest smile.
Arthur stared at her in shock.
