Chapter 1 - SHE IS—

Casey Peterson knew something was wrong before she reached the front desk.

Her brother had called twenty-three minutes earlier.

Not to ask for help.

To warn her.

“Mom got arrested.”

Casey had stood in the conference room of the state attorney general’s office, one hand still on a stack of public-corruption files.

“For what?”

Colton hesitated.

“Dana says Mom attacked her.”

Casey had gone cold.

“What happened to Mom?”

“She’s fine.”

That answer told her everything.

People say fine when they do not want you to ask what damage looks like.

Casey left without another word.

Now she pushed through the glass doors of the Pine Ridge Police Department wearing the black business suit she had not bothered to change.

The station smelled like old coffee, floor cleaner, and overheated electronics.

Then she saw Margaret.

Her mother sat handcuffed to a metal bench.

Bruises covered both forearms.

One sleeve had been torn near the shoulder.

A dark mark spread along the side of her face.

Her lower lip was swollen.

At sixty-seven, Margaret Peterson had always seemed indestructible to Casey.

She gardened in bad weather.

Drove herself to every appointment.

Still climbed on chairs to reach high cabinets despite everyone begging her not to.

Now she looked small.

Not weak.

Small because somebody had made the room around her hostile.

“Mom!”

Margaret looked up.

Her face broke instantly.

“Casey…”

Casey crossed the lobby and dropped beside her.

Margaret leaned into her daughter as far as the cuffs allowed.

Casey wrapped both arms around her.

“What happened?”

Margaret started crying.

“I didn’t do what they said.”

Casey pulled back and saw the red marks beneath the steel cuffs.

Her expression changed.

“Who did this to you?”

Before Margaret could answer, Dana Peterson stepped forward from the other side of the room.

Dana wore a cream sweater and had mascara streaked carefully down her cheeks.

She pointed.

“She attacked me!”

Colton caught Dana by the shoulders.

“Dana, calm down.”

Then he looked at Casey.

“Mom went crazy.”

Casey stood slowly.

Her eyes moved over Dana.

No visible bruise.

No torn clothing.

No medical wrap.

Then Colton.

He would not meet her eyes.

Casey said:

“You’re lying.”

Dana’s crying stopped for half a second.

Then restarted louder.

“How dare you?”

Casey ignored her.

She went to the desk.

A uniformed officer looked up.

“Take those cuffs off her.”

He hesitated.

“She’s under arrest.”

Casey slapped both hands onto the counter.

“She can barely stand.”

“She was brought in on an assault complaint.”

“Then why hasn’t she been medically evaluated?”

The officer looked toward the back hallway.

Behind Casey, Margaret began crying again.

“Casey, please don’t make this worse.”

That sentence hurt almost as much as the bruises.

Her mother was afraid of what the police might do if Casey challenged them.

Then an office door opened.

Chief Anthony Enzo stepped into the lobby.

Fifty-eight.

Broad shoulders.

Silver hair.

Uniform pressed perfectly.

He did not look surprised to see Casey.

That mattered.

“Enough,” he said.

Casey turned.

Enzo walked toward her.

“This is a family dispute.”

Casey pointed toward Margaret.

“You handcuffed a beaten woman and called it a dispute?”

“She was identified as the aggressor.”

“By Dana?”

“And your brother.”

“Did you interview my mother before arresting her?”

Enzo’s jaw tightened.

“We followed procedure.”

“What procedure lets you cuff a sixty-seven-year-old injured woman to a bench before she receives medical care?”

Enzo stepped closer.

“Do not come into my station throwing your title around.”

Casey stopped.

Every sound around them seemed to fade.

Dana stopped crying.

Colton looked toward Enzo.

Casey’s anger changed into something colder.

“I never mentioned my title.”

Enzo froze.

Only for a second.

But Casey saw it.

So did Colton.

Then footsteps pounded down the hallway.

A senior officer rushed into the room.

Lieutenant Samuel Greene.

He stopped when he saw Casey.

His eyes widened.

“Oh God.”

Enzo turned sharply.

“What?”

Greene looked from Enzo to Casey.

Then pointed at her with a trembling hand.

“She is—”

May you like

And Chief Enzo’s face finally revealed the thing Casey had been waiting to see.

Fear.
