Chapter 1 - THE CALLS IN VICTORIA'S PURSE

Victoria Bennett placed the narrow heel of her ivory shoe directly onto Claire's wounded hand.

Claire screamed.

The sound tore across the rain-dark entrance of Briarwood Country Club and vanished beneath the music inside. Warm light spilled through the tall glass doors. Beyond them, three hundred formally dressed guests raised champagne beneath crystal chandeliers while the Bennett Preservation Fund celebrated its twentieth anniversary.

Outside, on the wet pavement, the fund's chief compliance officer tried to pull her bleeding hand from beneath its founder's shoe.

Victoria pressed harder.

Pain flashed from Claire's crushed fingers to her shoulder. Rainwater ran beneath her cheek. Her dark hair clung to her face and the collar of the formal black coat twisted beneath her body. Blood mixed with water along the grooves in the pavement.

“Bleed out, you gold-digger.”

Victoria's voice carried no panic.

She sounded offended.

Her blonde hair remained smooth despite the rain. Pearls rested neatly at her throat. The ivory suit she wore had been selected for photographs with donors, retirees, widows, and local politicians. Not one drop of Claire's blood had touched it.

Daniel stood beneath the country club awning.

Claire looked toward her husband.

He wore a dark formal suit and the silver cuff links she had given him on their fifth anniversary. His face was pale. One hand flexed at his side as if some part of him remembered that a husband should move.

He did not.

“Daniel,” Claire gasped.

His eyes went to his mother's shoe.

Then to Claire's face.

Then away.

Victoria bent closer without releasing the pressure on Claire's hand.

“My son will finally be free.”

The words were almost tender.

Claire stared at Daniel.

Eight years of marriage reduced themselves to one wet moment: his refusal to look at her while another person decided how much pain she could survive.

An hour earlier, Daniel had stood beside Claire in the ballroom and introduced her as “the conscience of Bennett Capital.” Guests applauded. Victoria kissed her cheek. A photographer asked the family to move closer.

Twenty minutes later, Claire entered the records office behind the valet corridor and found the server drawer open.

After that came fragments.

Victoria's hand closing around Claire's wrist. A glass cabinet breaking. Daniel locking one door while asking Claire to be reasonable. The silver evidence drive disappearing from her coat. Claire forcing her way through the service exit with her right hand cut to the bone.

She had reached the parking court before Victoria caught her.

Now Daniel watched.

Claire stopped asking him to help.

She lowered her head as though pain had emptied what remained of her strength.

Victoria smiled.

“That's better.”

Claire's uninjured hand rested beneath her coat.

The hidden phone lay inside an inner pocket, screen facing her palm. She had configured the side button weeks earlier, after discovering two financial files had been opened remotely from Daniel's account. Three quiet presses would begin an encrypted emergency recording. A fourth would transmit whatever the phone had already preserved.

Claire found the button with her thumb.

One.

Two.

Three.

The phone gave no sound.

Victoria continued speaking above her.

“You thought those people inside would choose you over us?”

Claire remained still.

“No one will believe you now.”

Daniel shifted beneath the awning.

He looked toward Claire's coat.

Only for a second.

Claire noticed.

Her thumb pressed once more.

The phone continued recording. Somewhere beyond the rain and music, the encrypted packet left her device.

Claire allowed a faint smile to touch her mouth.

Victoria saw it.

Her expression changed.

“What are you smiling at?”

Claire raised her eyes.

She said nothing.

For one suspended moment, the three of them remained exactly where they were: Claire on the pavement, Victoria above her, Daniel close enough to intervene and still choosing not to.

Then a phone began ringing inside Victoria's purse.

Victoria glanced toward it.

The ringing stopped.

It began again.

Then again.

The sharp vibration rattled against the gold clasp. Victoria finally lifted her heel from Claire's hand and pulled the phone free.

Claire curled her wounded fingers against her chest.

Victoria looked at the screen.

Her eyes widened.

Her mouth fell open.

Daniel saw her expression and took one frightened step toward her.

Claire remained on the pavement, watching them with complete calm.

Victoria's hand began to shake.

“What did you do?”

May you like

Claire gave her a faint smile.

Victoria stared back at her in wide-eyed shock.
