Chapter 6 - TWO HANDS ON THE LEASH

The backup proved premeditation. It did not yet prove who had performed it.

Charles responded within hours. He claimed Elena had used her trust-protector access to create the drills, then hidden the records on conservation equipment she controlled. He accused Owen of accepting money to support her story.

Police searching Owen’s home found fifteen thousand dollars in cash inside a feed barrel.

They also found text messages from a number saved as ELENA PRIVATE:

KEEP THE SECOND PROFILE OFF THE BOOKS.

YOU WILL BE PAID AFTER THE SALE IS STOPPED.

Owen was questioned from his hospital bed. Elena was warned not to contact him again.

“Charles is not just destroying evidence,” Miriam said. “He is replacing it faster than we can expose it.”

Elena studied photographs of the cash. The bills were bound with narrow blue bands used by First Dominion Bank, where the Ward trust kept its operating accounts.

“He wants us to notice that,” she said.

“Why?”

“Because it makes him look too obvious. He’ll say anyone framing him would choose his bank.”

“A layer inside a layer.”

“That’s how he thinks.”

Miriam folded her arms. “Then stop reacting to the layer he gives us. What does he need, not just financially?”

Elena looked at the resort agreement again.

The deal required two obstacles to disappear: the trust protector who could veto the sale and the lifetime beneficiary whose occupancy rights prevented immediate possession.

Elena was the first obstacle.

Victoria was the second.

That afternoon, Elena requested a private meeting with Victoria in the glass conservatory of a Richmond hotel. Victoria arrived with two attorneys and refused to sit.

Her pearls were the same ones she had worn on the lawn.

Elena placed the Ashford Dominion agreement on the table.

“Charles told you the sale would preserve Blackthorn,” she said.

“My son does not discuss family matters with you anymore.”

“Page forty-three. Read the occupancy clause.”

Victoria did not touch it.

One of her attorneys did. His expression tightened.

The clause required the mansion to be delivered vacant within thirty days of closing. A separate certification described Victoria as likely to require long-term residential care and authorized the trustee to arrange it.

Her signature appeared beneath it.

“I never signed that,” Victoria said.

Elena watched the first fracture appear in her certainty.

“Charles needed me incapacitated so he could replace me as protector. What happens after that, Victoria?”

“You forged this.”

“He forged my name on a company that received stolen trust money. Why would he spare yours?”

Victoria’s face flushed. “You are trying to turn a mother against her son because your husband no longer wants you.”

“My husband programmed your dogs while you held the leashes.”

“He told me the collars would prevent contact.”

The words came out before Victoria could stop them.

Silence filled the conservatory.

Miriam did not move, but Elena saw her register the admission.

“So you knew there would be a pursuit,” Elena said.

Victoria recovered quickly. “I knew there would be a lesson. You were meant to be frightened, nothing more. Charles said the dogs would break away six feet from you.”

“One reached my face.”

“Because you interfered with the collars.”

“And if I hadn’t carried the recall?”

Victoria glanced at her attorneys. The meeting was over.

Before leaving, Elena slid a copy of the resort agreement toward her.

“You don’t have to trust me,” she said. “Check the signature yourself.”

Victoria left the document on the table.

But one of her attorneys quietly picked it up.

The admission should have shifted the case. Charles made certain it did not.

The next morning, officers arrested Elena on charges related to trust fraud, identity deception, and suspected witness bribery. New forensic results showed that the messages to Owen had been sent through an encrypted account created on Elena’s laptop. Her security certificate had approved the Blackthorn Revival transfers. A hotel camera showed her entering Owen’s room despite instructions to avoid contact.

Charles stood across the street as she was led from Miriam’s office in handcuffs.

He did not smile.

He only raised his phone and showed her a live image from Blackthorn’s lower lawn.

A bulldozer was parked beside the protected oak grove.
