Chapter 8 - THE GUESTS STOPPED BEING DECORATION
Twenty-one people attended dinner.
For years, Vivienne treated guests like scenery.
That night, they became witnesses.
Dr. Reed testified Vivienne smiled before approaching Elena.
He testified she kicked her.
Another guest, Lillian Price, heard Dominic say:
“The notary will be here any minute.”
A third guest saw Dominic move the black folder toward Elena’s place setting before dinner.
Arthur Kane, a retired judge, heard Vivienne tell Elena earlier that evening:
“You can make this peaceful or ugly.”
Vivienne denied saying it.
Arthur had recorded part of the dinner for a birthday toast Augustus’s friends planned to send the family archive.
The sentence was there.
So was something else.
Dominic, whispering to Vivienne:
“How long until it works?”
Vivienne:
“Stop asking.”
That did not prove intent to kill.
It strongly supported advance knowledge that something had been administered.
The case stopped depending on Elena’s interpretation.
That mattered.
