Chapter 3 - WHY MR. ALVAREZ DIDN’T TRUST THE SHERIFF

Mr. Alvarez had one reason for refusing the sheriff’s office.

Deputy Paul Grant.

Grant had been at Ashford Manor two nights before the burial.

Mr. Alvarez saw him leave Richard’s study carrying an envelope.

He also knew Grant had helped recover Emily’s “jacket” after the storm.

Too convenient.

So Mr. Alvarez drove Emily south.

First Virginia.

Then North Carolina.

Then to his niece, Elena Alvarez, in Atlanta.

Emily changed her name.

Emma Hart.

Not forever.

Just long enough to survive.

For two years she lived quietly.

Community college.

Night shifts.

Therapy under a false surname.

No social media.

Mr. Alvarez mailed her money from his pension.

Then stopped.

Emily panicked.

A month later, a letter arrived from an attorney.

Mr. Alvarez had died.

Stroke.

The letter contained a key.

And a note.

I kept the things they missed.

The key belonged to a safe-deposit box.

Inside:

photographs of the grave that night.

Copies of estate ledgers.

A small digital recorder.

And a sealed envelope from Emily’s mother, Caroline.

Dated three months before Caroline’s death.

Emily’s hands shook opening it.

The first line changed everything.

If Richard tells you I died owning nothing, he is lying.
