Chapter 6 - WHY THEY CAME BACK NOW

Richard and Linda had not returned because they missed Claire.

Not at first.

They returned because they were bankrupt.

Again.

For fifteen years, they moved through Nevada, Arizona, Mexico, and Texas under variations of their own names.

Richard eventually avoided the oldest fraud charges after limitations and evidentiary problems weakened the case.

He started another construction business.

It failed.

Then another.

Linda worked intermittently.

They accumulated tax debt.

Medical debt.

Private loans.

Then Richard invested their remaining savings into a luxury retirement development outside Phoenix.

The developer collapsed.

Their house was foreclosed.

Their accounts were frozen in a civil dispute.

They had less than three hundred dollars.

Then Linda saw Claire in a business magazine.

Claire Bennett: From Foster Care to Real Estate Powerhouse.

Mara showed Claire the search history recovered from an old tablet Richard left with a shelter intake worker.

Claire Bennett net worth.

Claire Bennett mansion address.

Claire Bennett parents.

Can adult child be forced to support parents Virginia.

Claire laughed when she saw the last one.

Mara did not.

“They weren’t only looking for shelter.”

“What did they want?”

“Your father contacted an attorney about filial support obligations.”

Claire’s face hardened.

He was exploring whether the daughter he abandoned could be legally pressured to pay for him.

There was no viable claim under their circumstances.

But the intent mattered.

Richard had arrived at the gates begging.

He had also arrived calculating.
