Chapter 10 - THE MAN SAMUEL COULD NOT FORGIVE
Dr. Lena Ortiz had survived by allowing the world to believe she was dead.
She told investigators that Voss Aeronautics knowingly substituted a cheaper alloy in hydraulic valves. The material developed microscopic fractures under heat. When she refused to certify it, Conrad's father removed her, forged her approval, and threatened her family.
After the Afghanistan crash, Ortiz contacted the military inquiry.
Captain Cole's signed statement ended it.
“You wrote that enemy fire destroyed the system before landing,” she told him. “They used your words to bury the valve.”
Cole's face turned gray. “I was told the wreckage confirmed it.”
“You were a captain. Your signature was confirmation.”
Samuel stood and left the room.
Cole followed him into the corridor. “Sam—”
“Do not call me that.”
“I did not know.”
“You knew you had not inspected the wreckage. You knew you were medicated. You signed anyway.”
Cole absorbed each sentence without defending himself.
Samuel had imagined the crash as something Voss did to them. Now he understood that the lie survived because decent people had each surrendered one inconvenient piece of truth.
He, too, had surrendered one.
After losing his leg, Samuel accepted a confidential compensation agreement from the contractor. The money paid for rehabilitation and a home accessible to him. In exchange, he agreed not to pursue civil claims about the valve.
He had never told Rachel until after they married.
“She forgave me,” Samuel said. “Then spent ten years trying to repair what my silence helped preserve.”
Cole looked through the glass at Ortiz. “What do you want me to do?”
“Stop asking the people harmed by your choice to design your redemption.”
Cole returned to the interview and gave a full sworn statement without conditions. He disclosed the medication, the pressure from investigators, the airline job, and every conversation he remembered. He also surrendered his pilot credentials pending review.
That night he informed the airline that he would not command another flight until cleared.
Samuel did not forgive him.
He did believe him.
Ortiz provided the authorization code needed to enter Bay 6142. A federal judge signed the search warrant.
Before agents reached Fort Morrow, the facility reported an electrical fire. Bay 6142 burned alone while surrounding bays remained untouched.
Security footage showed a maintenance truck leaving minutes earlier.
