Chapter 8 - THE DEAL BETWEEN THIEVES
Thomas had hidden inside a submerged drainage chamber while Warehouse 14 burned.
He escaped after the fire crews arrived, but a corrupt port officer found him before he reached police. The officer delivered him to Adrian, who treated the wound without creating a record and held him inside an unused clinic apartment. When the hospital recording made Richard fear a wider investigation, they moved Thomas to the tug, then to the launch.
Thomas had heard the plan from behind stacked cargo drums.
Celia wanted the warehouse empty before the Halcyon vote. Richard ordered the suppression system disabled and a controlled fire set near the paper archive. Adrian brought an accelerant that would mimic the caustic concentrate already leaking from one mislabeled container.
They expected Elise to arrive because Richard had sent the message from Thomas’s cloned account.
“Mr. Morgan said he would bring her out after she saw enough to frighten her,” Thomas told investigators. “Then she said she was calling the Coast Guard. Celia said if Elise walked away, the sale was dead.”
“What did Richard say?” Lena asked.
Thomas closed his eyes.
“He said, ‘Then she doesn’t walk away.’”
The plan changed from intimidation to murder in a sentence.
Thomas saw Richard lock the inland exit. Celia opened a catalyst drum near the archive. Adrian disabled a worker exposure sensor. When the vapor spread faster than expected, Thomas struck an emergency pipe three times to warn Elise. The flash shattered the safety glass and filled the warehouse with corrosive aerosol.
Elise survived because the blast broke the exterior loading door from its track.
Richard found her crawling toward the gap. He pulled her backward, but a second pressure wave threw both of them apart. Firefighters reached her first.
Adrian had said, “Make sure she can never identify the shipment,” because he wanted Richard to destroy the container seals before rescuers documented them.
The audio laboratory confirmed the voice match. Adrian’s foundation dinner photographs placed him at Harbor Crown earlier, but parking records showed him leaving at 10:11. His car entered Pier Nine’s medical gate at 10:49.
He began negotiating.
Adrian admitted falsifying employee exposure records for six years. He altered Evelyn’s charts after repeated low-level chemical exposure caused dizziness and visual disturbances. Evelyn had not suffered dementia. Richard used Adrian’s diagnosis to remove her from the company while Celia continued the red-cargo operation.
Adrian denied knowing that Evelyn would die.
The old collision investigation was reopened. Harbor archives showed that Evelyn’s launch entered the channel correctly. A Morgan maintenance barge moved without navigation lights while carrying undeclared waste. Celia had ordered the voyage. Richard learned of the collision within four minutes and instructed staff to erase the cargo schedule before calling authorities.
The crash might not have been planned.
The cover-up was.
Richard had allowed Elise to believe her mother’s illness caused the voyage. Celia had held Elise’s hand at the funeral while knowing why the barge was moving dark.
Neither thief trusted the other completely.
The red ledger in Richard’s safe-deposit box was his insurance against Celia. It recorded her coded shipment payments, Adrian’s medical reports, and Richard’s own profit shares. Richard had photographed the pages so he could bargain without surrendering the original.
Celia kept separate insurance. Investigators searching her home found an encrypted drive containing Richard’s orders to disable Pier Nine’s suppression system and drafts of the forged note in Elise’s handwriting.
Each had preserved the evidence necessary to destroy the other.
Richard approached prosecutors first.
He offered Celia, Adrian, the port officer, and the entire red-cargo network in exchange for immunity from the Pier Nine attempted-murder charge. He claimed Celia started the flash without warning him. The hospital intimidation, he said, was shameful but unrelated.
Celia offered the reverse. She claimed Richard engineered the fire and Evelyn’s cover-up while she merely concealed transactions under threat.
Prosecutors rejected both demands for immunity.
Then Richard activated his final defense.
Morgan Atlantic’s insurers received a file package apparently proving Elise had known about red cargo for three years and profited through the confidential risk account. The documents carried authentic board seals and emails from her address. If the insurer accepted them, coverage for the fire and environmental cleanup could be denied.
Morgan Atlantic might collapse before a jury heard the truth.
Elise examined the dates through her screen reader.
One email referred to a meeting she had supposedly attended aboard Evelyn’s old launch eighteen months earlier.
The launch had not been in the water.
It had spent that entire year inside a restoration shed equipped with an independent motion and humidity monitor required by its historic-vessel insurer.
The monitor recorded every time the cabin door opened.
On the date of the alleged meeting, no one entered.

But six weeks later, someone opened the cabin at 2:13 a.m. and remained inside for forty-seven minutes.
The access card belonged to Richard.
