Chapter 4 - THE SECOND SOCK

The USB belonged to Rachel.

At least, that was our first assumption.

The drive contained audio files.

Not music.

Voice recordings.

Rachel.

Her voice filled my study for the first time in more than a year.

I almost turned it off.

Then she said:

“If Daniel is listening, I’m sorry you found these this way.”

My hands started shaking.

Rachel had recorded notes during the last months of her illness.

Some were for Lily.

Some for me.

Some about practical matters.

Passwords.

Insurance.

Medical wishes.

Then one file was labeled:

VANESSA SHAW.

I stared at Claire.

Vanessa’s maiden name.

The recording date was two years before Rachel died.

Long before I dated Vanessa.

I pressed play.

Rachel said:

“Vanessa came to the hospital today with Eric.”

I felt sick.

Vanessa had told me she met Rachel once at a charity fundraiser.

That was a lie.

Rachel continued.

Eric’s firm was pitching estate-planning services to patients with complex assets.

Vanessa came because she worked in client relations.

They learned about Lily’s trust.

Rachel disliked how many questions Vanessa asked.

Not illegal.

Not necessarily sinister.

But memorable enough to record.

Then another file.

Rachel:

“Vanessa asked what happens if Daniel remarries. I told her I hope he does.”

Pause.

“But then she asked whether a future wife could become Lily’s legal mother and manage the trust. I told her absolutely not without safeguards.”

My stomach turned.

Vanessa knew about the trust before Rachel died.

Before our first date.

Possibly before she “accidentally” ran into me at a grief-support fundraiser ten months after Rachel’s death.

Claire said what I was thinking.

“She may have targeted you.”

I wanted to reject it.

Our first conversations felt real.

Vanessa listened.

Made me laugh.

Never rushed me, or so I thought.

Then we found calendar records.

The charity event where we reconnected had not been random.

Vanessa’s name was added to the guest list two days after my attendance was confirmed.

By Eric.

Daniel Miller, widower, attending.

That line appeared in an internal note.

Eric’s firm had once courted Rachel’s family account.

They knew who I was.

Then Eric’s lawyer offered a statement.

He admitted telling Vanessa the trust could eventually be worth millions.

He denied conspiring to marry me.

“She became obsessed,” he said.

“When?”

“After Rachel died.”

“With me?”

“With the idea that Rachel controlled the family from the grave.”

That sounded like Vanessa.

A competition with a dead woman.

Eric claimed he warned her not to pursue adoption for financial reasons.

Then why access the portal?

He said Vanessa asked him to verify whether adoption changed guardianship.

He used my login information she provided.

Unauthorized.

He checked.

He told her yes.

Then, according to Eric:

“She said, ‘Then Daniel needs to stop treating me like a girlfriend with a ring and make me Lily’s mother legally.’”

My skin crawled.

Vanessa’s obsession had two layers.

Emotional:

She wanted to replace Rachel.

Financial:

She wanted the legal position that came with doing it.

Then Claire examined the USB metadata.

The most recent file had been added eight months after Rachel died.

Rachel could not have recorded it.

The file was not audio.

It was a scanned document.

A draft petition for stepparent adoption.

Prepared months before Vanessa and I married.

Petitioner:

Vanessa Shaw.

Proposed spouse:

May you like

Daniel Miller.

She had planned the adoption before I proposed.
