Chapter 6 - THE WOMEN BEHIND THE NUMBERS
The voice memo began with Margaret instructing Vanessa to approve the inflated presentation.
Vanessa sounded uncertain. “Daniel will find the closed properties.”
“Then make him defend you,” Margaret answered. “He always does.”
The recording captured the strategy in plain language. If Daniel approved the deal, he shared the blame. If he refused, Vanessa would accuse him of sabotaging her career. If he discovered the fraud too late, they would use his delay as proof that he orchestrated it.
Then Margaret discussed the gala.
“Give him a reason to lose his temper in front of the board.”
Vanessa’s voice came after a long pause. “And if he doesn’t?”
“Humiliate him until he does.”
The wine had never been spontaneous rage.
Federal agents traced the Delaware entity to a trust administered for Margaret. Of the $18.6 million, $11 million had been routed toward her private debt. The remaining money was harder to explain: $2.4 million had entered an account established in Vanessa’s name.
Vanessa requested a proffer meeting.
She admitted that she knew the gala humiliation was staged and that some Aurelia numbers were unreliable. She denied knowing about the pension collateral or Margaret’s private debt. The account in her name, she said, had been opened by her mother using a power of attorney signed years earlier.
Margaret called her daughter a liar.
The family split in public. Each woman blamed the other. Their attorneys produced messages stripped of context, assistants with partial memories, and financial experts who could make any spreadsheet sound innocent.
Daniel did not escape. Prosecutors asked why he had written that he could “contain” the problem.
“I meant contain the damage,” he said.
“You also meant keep it from the board.”
“For twelve days. Yes.”
His honesty surprised them, but it did not absolve him.
The neutral trustee froze the acquisition. The board recovered most of the pension collateral before it left the bank, but $6 million was already missing.
Lucy gave prosecutors one final file: access logs showing Vanessa had used Daniel’s tablet to authorize the transfer.

Six minutes before Vanessa used it, Daniel had unlocked the tablet and handed it to her.
