Chapter 8 - THE DIVORCE
Mason filed for divorce one month after the beach.
Not because of Zayn alone.
That surprised people.
His own mother asked:
“If she ended the affair, could you forgive it?”
Mason thought.
Maybe once.
Before the money.
Before the signature plan.
Before learning the anniversary was a setup.
Now?
“No.”
Talia fought the divorce emotionally before she fought it legally.
She sent letters.
Left voicemails.
Asked for therapy.
Then blamed stress.
Then blamed Diane.
Then blamed Zayn.
Then, finally, stopped blaming.
That came during mediation.
The mediator asked her:
“What do you believe ended the marriage?”
Talia looked at Mason.
He expected:
The affair.
Instead she said:
“I stopped treating him like a person who could say no.”
Mason went still.
That was the first true sentence she had offered without wrapping it.
She continued.
“I thought because he could fix things, it was okay to keep handing him broken things.”
Her voice shook.
“And when I knew he would say no, I stopped asking.”
Mason looked down.
That was it.
Not everything.
But enough.
The divorce settlement was not revenge.
Their prenuptial agreement protected Mason’s premarital ownership in Hartley Consulting.
Talia retained fair marital assets and her own retirement.
She repaid corporate funds through her share of liquid marital property and a structured judgment.
Diane sold her house before foreclosure, paid the lender, and moved into a small townhouse.
Connor finally entered a debt-management program instead of asking family for another rescue.
Zayn returned the unused portion of Blue Meridian’s retainer and signed a civil settlement with Hartley Consulting over misrepresented business dealings.
He and Talia did not stay together.
Mason heard that from Amanda.
He asked no questions.
That surprised him too.
