Chloe stopped protecting Julian after reading his deposition.
Not because she suddenly became noble.
Because she finally understood she had been used too.
She had betrayed Claire for a future Julian never intended to give her.
The realization did not erase her choices.
It made them more humiliating.
Chloe turned over everything.
Texts.
Hotel receipts.
Voice messages.
Corporate drafts.
One voice memo mattered most.
Julian, four months into the affair:
Once Claire signs out, everything gets simpler. She’ll be angry, but she hates messy fights. She’ll take money and move on.
Chloe:
What if she doesn’t?
Julian:
She always chooses dignity over spectacle.
Claire listened twice.
There it was.
He knew her.
Used her self-control against her.
Then another message.
Chloe:
I can’t keep doing this if you’re staying married.
Julian:
After Hawthorne closes, I’ll handle Claire.

The phrase made Maya’s expression harden.
Chloe testified in the corporate case.
She admitted the affair.
Admitted she knew Claire had never explicitly said she was leaving the company.
Admitted she benefited from believing Julian’s story.
She also testified Margaret told her:
“Claire has had the bigger piece her whole life. This is correction, not theft.”
Claire heard that in court.
It hurt more than Julian’s lies.
Because Margaret was family before Julian.
Aunt.
Surrogate mother after Claire’s mother died.
The woman who sat beside them at Christmas.
Correction, not theft.
Claire finally understood how Margaret justified everything.
Not greed.
Balance.
A warped belief that Claire’s competence had created a debt to everyone less secure.
After testimony, Margaret tried to speak to Claire.
Claire stopped her.
“You don’t get to explain equality by taking what I didn’t offer.”
Margaret cried.
“I loved both of you.”
“I know.”
That was the tragedy.
