Chapter 4 - THE BODY WOKE UP IN THE VAN

Grant told the truth in fragments.

First to Mara.

Then to Evelyn.

He cried through most of it.

Charles had been placed in a transport van just after midnight.

Preston was there.

Grant was there.

Dr. Shaw had already left.

The plan, Grant said, was to take Charles to the funeral facility.

He still believed his father was dead.

Then halfway there, the body bag moved.

Grant screamed.

Preston pulled the van over.

They unzipped it.

Charles gasped.

Weakly.

Confused.

Alive.

Grant wanted to call an ambulance.

Preston stopped him.

“He said Dad would destroy us.”

Evelyn’s entire body went cold.

“Destroy you how?”

Grant stared at the table.

“The trust.”

There it was.

Money.

Not grief.

Not panic.

Control.

Charles had discovered that Preston and Grant had borrowed against expected future trust distributions using forged board authorizations.

Grant insisted Preston created the structure.

Grant signed some documents anyway.

Together, the brothers had exposed the Vale family holding company to more than $18 million in undisclosed guarantees tied to a failing real-estate venture.

Charles found out.

He scheduled an emergency trustees’ meeting.

Then he collapsed before it happened.

When he woke in the van, Preston panicked.

He told Grant they needed “time.”

They moved Charles to an unused private-care cottage owned by the family foundation.

They hired a nurse.

They told her Charles had severe cognitive impairment and required sedation.

Grant knew it was wrong.

He stayed.

That was his betrayal.

Fear did not erase it.

Two days later, the nurse disappeared.

So did Charles.
