Chapter 7 - PRESTON BLAMED GRANT

Preston hired the best defense team in Chicago.

Then he did what powerful people often do when facts become expensive.

He separated himself from everyone weaker.

First Dr. Shaw.

Then the nurse.

Then Grant.

He claimed Grant devised the plan.

Grant panicked after Charles woke.

Grant ordered the cottage.

Grant pushed for the funeral.

The problem was documentation.

Preston had sent messages.

To Grant:

If he wakes before Monday, keep him calm. We only need three days.

To Dr. Shaw:

I need the directive recognized tonight.

To the funeral manager:

Closed casket. No exceptions. Mom cannot view.

The phrase Mom cannot view made Evelyn physically ill.

Not because it proved attempted murder.

It did not.

But it proved intent to hide the truth from her.

Grant eventually entered a cooperation agreement.

Not immunity.

He admitted helping move Charles.

Admitted remaining silent.

Admitted lying to Evelyn.

He also provided a recorded conversation with Preston after Charles escaped.

Grant:

We have to tell Mom.

Preston:

Tell her what? That Dad isn’t dead? Then everything blows up.

Grant:

He could die out there.

Preston:

May you like

Then pray he does before he talks.

That sentence became the center of the case.
