Chapter 5 - THE RED CASE VANESSA WOULD NOT RELEASE

Vanessa said her phone connected automatically while she drove past headquarters.
Traffic-camera footage showed her car entering the underground garage.
Marcus changed his account. He admitted Vanessa came to the office but claimed she brought documents Daniel told him were lawful. In exchange for approving the late-night authorization, Marcus received an interest in a subcontractor called Northstar Materials.
Northstar supplied the deficient bolts and created false certificates for the missing steel.
The company was registered through three layers of holding firms. Its beneficial owner was Vanessa.
Northstar's profits explained the apartment Vanessa recently bought through a trust and the luxury car she claimed was leased. Daniel had approved invoices at nearly twice the market price. Marcus ensured inspection questions stopped before reaching Richard's board.
The three did not simply save money. They created private profit from public risk.
Daniel publicly blamed both of them.
“I trusted my secretary and Mr. Shaw,” he said. “They betrayed my company and family.”
Privately, he sent Claire flowers and requested a meeting.
She agreed only with attorneys present.
Daniel arrived without Vanessa. He looked older than he had before the earthquake.
“I made an unforgivable choice in the rubble,” he said.
“Which one?” Claire asked. “The cheaper steel, the mistress, or leaving Noah?”
He flinched.
“Vanessa had the emergency insurance keys in that red case. I thought saving her would let us release money for rescue operations.”
Richard's attorney placed an insurance policy on the table. Emergency payments required no physical key and could be released remotely by three executives, including Richard.
Daniel's explanation failed before it reached the second page.
“What was really in the case?” Claire asked.
“I don't know.”
“You looked at it before you looked at our son.”
Daniel's eyes hardened. “Your father is teaching you to see conspiracy in grief.”
“No. You taught me.”
Daniel glanced toward the door, where Richard waited outside by Claire's request.
“Your father never wanted me in this family.”
“My father gave you the land, the company contract, and his name beside yours.”
“He made me prove myself every day.”
“So you used weaker steel?”
Daniel stood. “You will regret letting him turn this into a war.”
Claire remained seated with her leg braced and said, “It became a war when you put my signature on a wall you knew might fall.”
He left without apologizing to Noah.
The journalist's shattered phone recovered from the atrium provided a partial livestream. Daniel's voice appeared beneath the alarms as he lifted Vanessa.
“Where is the drive?” he asked.
Vanessa answered, “In the case. Get me out, and it stays safe.”
Investigators searched the triage footage.

Vanessa still wore the red case when Daniel carried her beyond the ruins. Twenty minutes later, she entered an ambulance without it.
The case had disappeared somewhere between Claire's screams and Vanessa's hospital ride.
