Chapter 7 - THE FLIGHT PLAN FILED BEFORE THE GROUND MOVED

The helicopter's flight plan had been filed fifty-three minutes before the earthquake.

To Daniel's attorneys, that proved Richard anticipated the collapse.

The explanation was less dramatic and more troubling.

Carter Meridian's seismology contractor detected a cluster of small tremors near a newly mapped fault. At 8:05 a.m., it sent a private advisory recommending inspection of sites with unresolved structural notices. Richard placed the disaster-response crew on standby and ordered the helicopter to collect engineers from two locations.

Meridian Center appeared on the advisory list.

Richard called Daniel at 8:17.

Daniel assured him the center had passed supplemental review and refused to cancel the dedication. He did not tell Claire about the warning. He insisted she bring feverish Noah for the family photograph.

The earthquake struck at 8:58.

Richard's helicopter was already airborne when Claire's emergency locator activated beneath the rubble.

“You knew there was risk,” Claire said.

Richard did not hide behind probability. “I knew there was enough risk to send engineers. I should have ordered the center closed instead of asking Daniel.”

“Could you?”

“As land donor and board chair, I could have delayed the ceremony. I was afraid of causing panic and humiliating him publicly.”

Both father and daughter heard the price of that fear.

Richard gave the advisory, flight records, and call log to investigators. He accepted that they might expose him to civil liability for failing to act decisively.

His honesty weakened Daniel's conspiracy claim but did not absolve him.

Meanwhile, forensic technicians examined the empty red case. Its lining contained traces of flash-storage polymer and one partial fingerprint belonging to Marcus. The missing drive had carried the master construction ledger and full meeting archives.

Marcus entered a cooperation agreement. He admitted Daniel ordered the material substitutions to cover losses on another project. Vanessa created Northstar and split profits with him. Marcus used Claire's certificate after Daniel provided the token.

“Where is the drive?” prosecutors asked.

Marcus said Vanessa kept it as insurance against Daniel.

Vanessa said she hid it during triage.

Search footage showed one person approach her while Daniel argued with medics.

It was Leonard Shaw, Marcus's adult son and a Carter Meridian security manager.

Vanessa handed him the red case.

Leonard disappeared from the disaster scene nineteen minutes later.

His abandoned vehicle was found at the airport.

The flight manifest showed he had boarded a plane to Toronto carrying one small black backpack.
