Chapter 7 - THE BAG RETURNED
The handbag had disappeared during the confusion outside the hotel. Claire assumed security collected it. Hotel records showed a valet handed it to Richard's driver after being told it belonged in the black SUV.
The driver, Samuel Price, admitted returning it months later. He had found the flash drive beneath the SUV's rear seat after Richard's office boxes were moved.
Samuel did not know what it contained. He copied nothing and asked for no reward.
Forensic analysts handled the drive before Claire opened it. Its metadata predated the divorce. The valuation model estimated Bennett Guest Systems between fifty-eight and eighty-four million dollars, depending on the pilot contract.
Richard's initials appeared in review comments.
His defense argued a model was not a completed valuation and that optimistic internal projections differed from fair market value. That was true. But one comment from Richard read: Do not circulate until property settlement closes.
Prosecutors added the drive to evidence of intentional concealment.
Richard attacked its chain of custody. Samuel had stored it in an unlocked drawer for months. Files could have been altered. Independent server backups later matched the spreadsheet's cryptographic hash, preserving its value.
Martin pleaded guilty to conspiracy to submit false financial disclosures and agreed to testify. He forfeited his bonus. Cooperation shortened his likely sentence; it did not convert him into a hero.
The creditor committee approved the restructuring without Alexander. Richard lost operational control but retained a reduced economic stake after contributing personal assets. Four hotels were sold. One hundred eighty corporate positions were eliminated, but hotel staff layoffs were limited and retirement matches restored.
Hale Ridge did not seize the empire for pennies. Its recovery was capped under the debt agreement, and independent investors purchased the reorganized equity through an auction.
Richard continued telling the press Alexander engineered everything.
The assault case went to trial first. Full video showed the thrown cup and shove. Richard claimed expressive conduct during a personal dispute, not intent to injure. The judge convicted him of misdemeanor assault and harassment, ordered community service, and imposed a no-contact order.
At sentencing, Richard apologized to the court before he apologized to Claire.
She noticed the order.
