Chapter 5 - MARK FOUGHT BACK

Mark did not fold.
Claire had expected denial, maybe panic, maybe a midnight apology disguised as “confusion.”
Instead, he counterattacked.
On Monday morning, he filed a complaint through base channels alleging that Claire had physically assaulted him at the operations building in front of subordinates, was emotionally unstable, and had been harassing one of his civilian associates.
By Monday afternoon, Claire’s access to certain spouse-support facilities on base was temporarily restricted pending review.
By Monday evening, Mark’s mother called to say Claire was “ruining a good man’s career over jealousy.”
Claire hung up before she finished the sentence.
Then the next hit came.
Mark’s attorney petitioned for temporary exclusive control of the marital house, citing Claire’s “erratic conduct” and “hostility in the presence of a minor child.”
Julia read it in silence, then looked up.
“He’s trying to build you into the unstable spouse.”
Claire let out a short, bitter laugh. “Of course he is.”
But he had miscalculated one thing.
He had gone after her publicly, quickly, and arrogantly—before securing all the pieces.
Bowen, the gate soldier, requested a private meeting.
He arrived in civilian clothes, pale and miserable.
“I’m not trying to get involved,” he said. “But what happened that night… it didn’t sit right.”
He brought copies of the gate incident log and confirmed that Mark had personally called ahead to instruct the checkpoint to hold Claire if she arrived.
He also handed over something else.
A statement.
Short, direct, signed.
Captain Halstead appeared to be in an intimate embrace with civilian contractor Natalie Mercer immediately before Mrs. Halstead approached.
That statement mattered.
So did the camera.
The checkpoint surveillance footage clearly showed Claire arriving with Liam and the soup, Bowen blocking her, and Mark emerging with Natalie wrapped against him.
It did not show the entire conversation clearly.
It did show enough.
Enough to make it difficult for Mark to pretend this was a delusional wife attacking him over nothing.
Meanwhile, the insurance investigator discovered that Natalie had accessed beneficiary documents from a terminal she was not authorized to use after business hours.
And the broker’s office, suddenly aware they were in the middle of potential fraud, began cooperating quickly.

Mark was not just lying.
He had left fingerprints everywhere.
