Chapter 7 - LIAM HEARD TOO MUCH

The night before the command review, Mark came to the house.
He did not knock like a husband.
He pounded like a man who still believed the walls answered to him.
Claire had already changed the locks, but the pounding jolted Liam awake upstairs. Julia’s investigator had arranged for a patrol car to idle half a block away because they had begun expecting exactly this sort of desperation.
Claire stepped into the foyer and turned on the interior recording system before approaching the door.
“What do you want?”
Mark’s voice came through the wood.
“Talk to me.”
“You had that chance.”
“Claire, open the damn door.”
“No.”
His tone sharpened. “You are destroying my career over paperwork.”
Claire laughed bitterly. “Paperwork doesn’t kiss women outside operations buildings.”
There was silence.
Then, lower: “Natalie panicked. She got greedy.”
Claire closed her eyes.
So that was his angle now.
Feed her just enough blame to see whether she’d reopen the door.
He continued.
“She pushed the policy harder than I wanted.”
“And the draft on Liam?”
No answer.
Then: “You don’t understand how ugly custody can get.”
Claire gripped the edge of the console so hard her fingers hurt.
Upstairs, she heard a floorboard creak.
Liam.
Listening.
“Get off my porch,” she said.
Mark’s voice dropped into something that chilled her blood.
“All I needed was one accident, Claire. One. Do you know how many wives collect sympathy while their husbands rebuild? You could have walked away wealthy.”
Claire went motionless.
The house recorded everything.
So did the small backup recorder in her pocket.
“Say that again,” she whispered.
He must have realized too late what he had admitted, because his fist hit the door.
“Open up!”
A squad car turned the corner.
Blue lights washed across the front windows.
Mark stepped back just as the officer approached the walkway.
From the stairs, Liam made a tiny sound.
Claire turned and found him clutching the banister in dinosaur pajamas, eyes huge with terror.
“Did Dad say accident?” he whispered.
Every shred of composure Claire had left almost vanished.
She crossed the room in two steps and pulled him into her arms.
“No one is ever going to hurt you,” she said fiercely.
May you like
Not again.
Not even with words.
