Chapter 1 - THE HOTEL ROOM, THE WATER, AND THE NAME I WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO HEAR

The first thing I felt when I opened the hotel-room door was heat.

Not from the room.

From my own body.

The kind of heat that comes when humiliation, adrenaline, and heartbreak hit at the exact same time and your brain can no longer decide whether you should cry, scream, or black out.

There he was.

My husband.

Captain Ethan Mercer, still in his pilot uniform, tie loosened, sleeves rolled, standing three feet away from a blonde flight attendant I recognized from his crew photos. Vanessa Cross. Glossy hair. Perfect lipstick. The woman he once described as “annoyingly efficient.”

She was too close to him.

He was too close to her.

And the room itself was too intimate.

One lamp lit. Two glasses on the table. A bed turned down by housekeeping. A door latch engaged from the inside. The kind of scene that didn’t need explanation because the room seemed to have already provided one.

I didn’t think.

I lifted the water sprayer I had grabbed from the housekeeping cart outside and blasted both of them in the face.

Vanessa screamed first.

Ethan threw both hands up.

“Claire!”

“YOU LIED TO ME!” I screamed.

Vanessa stumbled backward, soaked, clutching her blouse. Ethan took one step toward me, then stopped when he saw my face.

I didn’t look like a wife trying to salvage a marriage.

I looked like a woman who had walked all the way through betrayal and reached the other side of fear.

He must have realized it, because his own expression changed.

“Claire, listen to me.”

I threw the sprayer aside.

Then I yanked the folded divorce papers from my bag and slammed them into his chest hard enough to make him stagger.

“We’re done.”

The sound that came out of Vanessa was not triumph.

It was panic.

Ethan grabbed the papers reflexively, eyes wide. “I never cheated!”

The sentence was so stupid, so insulting, that I actually laughed.

A short, ugly laugh.

I pointed straight at Vanessa.

“Then why is she here?”

Vanessa opened her mouth, but Ethan cut in fast.

“It’s not what you think.”

“Every liar says that.”

I turned to walk out.

Then Vanessa grabbed Ethan’s arm so hard her nails dug through his wet sleeve.

Her face twisted with anger.

“You were supposed to keep her away!” she hissed.

I stopped so abruptly my heel squeaked against the floor.

Ethan went pale.

Really pale.

Not guilty-husband pale.

Terrified pale.

He looked at Vanessa as if she had just set fire to the room.

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“If she finds out about Flight 427, we’re finished.”

I turned slowly.

I could hear my own pulse in my ears.

“Flight 427?”

Vanessa’s expression collapsed.

Ethan didn’t speak.

Neither of them moved.

I stared at both of them, soaked hotel carpet under my feet, divorce papers still in Ethan’s trembling hands, and felt the shape of something much worse than an affair rising between us.

“What the hell,” I whispered, “is Flight 427?”
