Chapter 1 - THE LOWER LEDGE

Caleb screamed before Evelyn understood what Vanessa had done.

One second the four-year-old stood three feet from the mountain edge in his blue jacket, staring at a hawk circling below.

The next, Vanessa’s hand struck his back.

Hard.

Caleb pitched forward.

“GRANDMA!”

Evelyn lunged.

Her knees hit rock.

Both hands caught his right hand and wrist as his small body disappeared over the edge.

Wind tore at her beige coat.

Caleb swung below her, crying and kicking helplessly.

“Help me!” Evelyn screamed.

Daniel ran toward them.

“Help your son!”

He stopped.

Not because there was no room.

Not because he could not reach.

He stopped and looked at Vanessa.

That was the moment Evelyn would remember more clearly than the fall.

Vanessa stepped beside him.

Her face was white with panic, but her voice was cold.

“Do it.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

He stepped forward.

Evelyn thought he was finally coming for Caleb.

Instead his shoe struck her side.

Then his hand drove hard into her shoulder.

Her weight shifted.

Her chest slid across the rock.

Caleb screamed again.

Evelyn refused to let go.

Then all three points of balance disappeared.

She went over.

Wind.

Rock.

A violent drop.

Evelyn twisted in the air and pulled Caleb toward her chest.

They crashed onto a lower rocky ledge.

Pain exploded through her hip and shoulder.

For one second she could not breathe.

Then Caleb moved.

Alive.

Crying.

Evelyn wrapped herself around him.

Above, Daniel appeared at the edge.

“Mom!”

Evelyn lifted her head.

Vanessa stood behind him.

Daniel’s face looked horrified.

Not victorious.

Horrified by his own choice.

“Daniel?” Evelyn whispered.

Then Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“Get the phone.”

Evelyn heard it clearly.

Her phone.

Why the phone?

It was no longer in her coat.

She had set it on a flat rock minutes earlier after showing Daniel a photograph.

Evelyn looked upward.

Daniel disappeared from the edge.

Not to climb down.

Not to call for help.

To find the phone.

Caleb whimpered against her.

Evelyn pressed her hand behind his head.

“Stay with me, baby.”

Then a new voice echoed across the overlook.

“Hey! Is somebody down there?”

A hiker.

Evelyn screamed until her lungs burned.

Fifteen minutes later, park rescue staff reached them by a side access line.

Caleb had bruising, a scraped knee, and terror.

No severe injury.

Evelyn had a badly bruised hip, a shoulder sprain, and a cracked rib.

Painful.

Stable.

As rescuers lifted Caleb toward safety, Evelyn saw Daniel again.

He was speaking to a ranger.

Vanessa stood beside him.

Then Evelyn heard Daniel say:

“He slipped.”

The cliff had not even finished echoing from the fall.

Her son had already chosen the first sentence of the cover story.
