Chapter 5 - THE RETRAINING EMAIL
Daniel’s explanation:
The retraining was precautionary.
After Marissa fell, RidgeLine strengthened rules beyond what had happened that day.
Possible.
Then investigators found an internal group message.
Vanessa:
No rope moves. Ever. I don’t care if the shot sucks.
Cole:
Copy.
Daniel:
We cannot have another Marissa situation.
That phrase mattered.
Another Marissa situation.
Not:
another guest crossing the line.
Then Vanessa messaged Daniel privately:
Delete the test footage before renewal review. They’ll misread setup.
Daniel:
Already pulled the card.
The date:
two days after Marissa’s fall.
So Daniel knew footage could contradict the report.
The old card Caleb found had not been “broken.”
It had been removed from normal storage intentionally.
Why was it later in Daniel’s garage?
He kept it.
Why?
Daniel told investigators:
because he could not bring himself to destroy it.
That was plausible.
Guilt.
Evidence preservation.
Cowardice.
All at once.
Then why tell Caleb it was broken?
Because he did not want his four-year-old playing with it.
Reasonable.
Then why not tell Evelyn the truth when she found it?
Because by then:
insurance claim settled,
permit renewed,
business had grown,
and disclosure would threaten all of it.
RidgeLine was not huge.
Revenue:
about $410,000 annually.
After:
vehicles,
insurance,
staff,
permits,
marketing,
debt,
profit was modest.
Daniel had personally guaranteed:
$180,000
in equipment and launch financing.
Vanessa had invested:
nearly all of her savings.
If the permit was suspended:
business could collapse.
Financial pressure mattered.
But it did not explain the mountain assault alone.
Then Evelyn asked:
“Why was Vanessa so afraid of my phone?”
Because Evelyn had recorded the family confrontation that morning.
Before they drove to the overlook, she had stopped at Daniel’s house.
She activated a voice memo when Vanessa became defensive.
The recording continued in Evelyn’s coat pocket.
On it:
Evelyn:
“Did you remove the rope?”
Vanessa:
“For the shot.”
Daniel:
“Vanessa—”
Vanessa:
“It was back before anyone was supposed to be near the edge.”
Evelyn:
“Marissa fell.”
Vanessa:
“Because she moved after I turned away.”
Then Daniel:
“I signed what the insurer needed because if they treated it as a permit violation, we were finished.”
Silence.
That was the admission.
Evelyn had later shown Daniel the phone at the overlook.
Not the SD card.
The recording.
Then Caleb asked to hold the phone because he wanted to see the hawk photo.
Evelyn let him.
Minutes later, he stood near the edge with the phone tucked into his small jacket pocket.
Vanessa saw the phone.
Walked toward him.
Then shoved him.
