Chapter 3 - THE OLD INCIDENT
Daniel’s attorney called the next morning.
Evelyn refused to speak without her own counsel.
She was not interested in negotiating family truth.
The criminal investigation focused first on:
the mountain incident.
The business investigation came second.
RidgeLine’s original report for Marissa’s fall said:
boundary rope installed at 4:30 p.m.
Marissa fell:
5:18.
A guide assistant named Cole Mercer signed a witness statement:
Boundary remained in position until after emergency response.
But the recovered scenic video from Evelyn’s description suggested it was removed before 5:00.
No card.
No video.
Only Evelyn’s memory.
Then a photographer from the Marissa group came forward after hearing about the new fall.
He had raw files.
At 5:04 p.m., one image showed:
no rope.
At 5:09:
no rope.
At 5:16:
a coil of red boundary cord lay behind a bench.
Two minutes later:
Marissa fell.
The boundary had not been in place.
Daniel’s incident report was false.
Then the insurer reopened the old claim review.
Not to magically reclaim money.
To determine whether RidgeLine had made a material misrepresentation affecting:
coverage,
renewal,
and future underwriting.
The county permit office also opened a compliance investigation.
Vanessa’s first defense was intelligent.
The rope was not the only boundary.
There was a painted setback line on the stone surface.
Small warning signs had been posted.
Marissa had crossed them.
Could be true.
Then Marissa’s original statement was retrieved.
“I stepped where the guide told us to stand.”
Which guide?
Vanessa.
She had arranged the photo.
Vanessa said Marissa misunderstood:
“Move left” as “step over the line.”
No witness could prove intent.
Then Evelyn received a message from an unknown number.
ONE PHOTO DOESN’T SHOW THE WHOLE SITE.
She stared.
Next:
DANIEL WAS TRYING TO PROTECT YOU FROM SOMETHING BIGGER.
No threat.
No demand.
Then a third message:
ASK WHY THE COUNTY INSPECTOR NEVER SAW THE 4:42 VIDEO.
Evelyn forwarded everything to investigators.
What 4:42 video?
The old SD card had a gap.
Files jumped from 4:39 to 4:47.
