Sophie disappeared from her bedroom while two officers were inside the house.
The back window was open.

Adrian told her that if she said Daniel scared Vanessa, everyone would live together in the big house without arguments.
Sophie wanted peace.

Daniel did not rush to her.

“Are you mad?”
“No.”
“I said you scared Mommy.”
“I know.”
“She told me I forgot things.”
Daniel sat several feet away.
“You are not in trouble for believing an adult.”
Sophie moved into his arms.
For the first time that night, he let himself break.
The emergency protective request against him collapsed.
A temporary order placed Sophie with an independent relative—Daniel’s sister Laura—while both parents were investigated.
Daniel accepted it.
Vanessa objected.
She demanded maternal custody.
Then police found another audio file on Adrian’s laptop.
Vanessa’s voice:
“Once Sophie disappears, Daniel will look desperate. If he goes to the house, arrest him. If he stays away, call him uncaring.”
Adrian answered:
“And Claire?”
“Use her until she becomes a liability.”
Claire listened.
The betrayal was complete.
Daniel asked:
“Who is the man in the hotel to you?”
Vanessa’s answer appeared in another recording.
“My brother.”
Adrian Cole was not her lover.
He was her half brother.
Their intimacy in the photo had been staged for Claire to discover.
