Chapter 10 - THE CHILD BEFORE OUR MARRIAGE
The beneficiary's identity was sealed behind a private adoption record.
Noah needed a judge.
Margaret fought the petition aggressively.
Too aggressively.
That told Claire the secret mattered.
Daniel had apparently fathered another child before marrying Claire.
Claire wondered how much betrayal a marriage could contain before it ceased being a marriage at all.
The court opened only part of the record.
Child born:
Fourteen years earlier.
Mother:
Redacted.
Father:
Daniel Michael Bennett.
Sex:
Female.
Adoption finalized six months later.
Claire sat back.
“A daughter.”
Noah nodded.
“Daniel was twenty-seven.”
A year before he met Claire.
Claire felt no jealousy.
This child had existed before her.
What she felt was confusion.
Why hide her?
Why would Margaret care?
Vanessa contacted Noah through her lawyer.
She wanted immunity discussions.
Federal pressure was working.
During her proffer, Vanessa revealed Daniel himself had not known where his daughter went.
Margaret arranged the adoption.
“Why?” Claire asked.
“Daniel was starting at Bennett Capital,” Vanessa said. “Margaret thought an out-of-wedlock child would complicate the family trust.”
Claire stared.
“So she erased a baby.”
“She paid the mother.”
“What was her name?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Rachel Lane.”
Claire knew that name.
Her stomach dropped.
Rachel Lane had been Claire's college roommate.
Her closest friend for three years.
They had lost contact after graduation.
“No.”
Vanessa looked confused.
“You know her?”
Claire could barely speak.
Rachel had introduced Claire to Daniel.
At a charity dinner.
Rachel had said:
“You two would be perfect together.”
Claire stood.
“She knew.”
Noah tried to calm her.
Claire called the last number she had for Rachel.
Disconnected.
They searched.
Rachel Lane had died seven years earlier from ovarian cancer.
Her obituary listed no children.
But one surviving sister:
Emily Lane Foster.
They found Emily in Indiana.
When Claire explained why she was calling, Emily went silent.
“My sister made me promise.”
“Please.”
“She didn't want you to know.”
“Know what?”
“Rachel loved Daniel.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“She got pregnant. Daniel wanted to keep the baby.”
That contradicted everything.
“Margaret convinced Rachel that Daniel would lose his inheritance.”
Emily continued.
“Rachel agreed to adoption because she thought it protected him.”
“Did Daniel agree?”
“At first. Then he changed his mind.”
“What happened?”
“Margaret told him the baby died.”
Claire went cold.
“She told Rachel the adoptive family left the country.”
Margaret had lied to both parents.
The baby lived.
Daniel believed she died.
Rachel believed she was gone.
Margaret controlled the truth.
“Why add the child to the trust?”
“Daniel's father found out.”
The grandfather secretly amended the trust so any biological child of Daniel would inherit, adopted or not.
Margaret could not remove the provision.
She could only hide the child.
“Where is she?”
Emily whispered, “I don't know.”
Then she remembered one thing.
The adoptive family's surname.
Miller.
Noah traced sealed ancillary records.
Eventually, a first name emerged.
Sophie.
Fourteen years old.
Living less than twenty miles from Claire.
The next revelation came from a school emergency-contact form obtained through court process.
Sophie Miller's adoptive mother was dead.
Her guardian was listed as:
Claire Bennett.
Claire stared at the page.
“What?”
Noah looked equally stunned.
Claire had never met Sophie.
Yet someone had legally named Claire as contingent guardian three years earlier.
The signature authorizing it belonged to Rachel.
Signed before she died.
Attached was a letter.
Addressed to Claire.
Never delivered.
