Chapter 6 - MARGARET'S FIRST CONFESSION

Margaret agreed to meet only after Claire threatened to go directly to federal investigators.
They chose a church.

Margaret's choice.

Claire nearly laughed at the irony.

Her former mother-in-law sat in the third pew wearing navy.

Exactly as she had at Daniel's funeral.

Claire remained standing.

“Where is he?”

Margaret looked older than she had at the airport.

“I won't tell you.”

“Then I'm leaving.”

“Claire.”

She stopped.

Margaret's voice broke.

“I didn't know about Vanessa at first.”

Claire turned.

“I don't care.”

“I need you to.”

“No. You need me to because it makes what you did easier to explain.”

Margaret lowered her eyes.

Claire sat two pews away.

“Start with the money.”

Margaret clasped her hands.

Daniel had discovered that Bennett Capital's majority investor, Thomas Bell, had been using the firm to wash money through fraudulent investment vehicles.

Daniel initially threatened to expose him.

Then Bell showed Daniel something.

Evidence that Daniel himself had already committed crimes.

“What crimes?” Claire asked.

“Unauthorized transfers. False valuations. Personal use of client accounts.”

“So Daniel was guilty.”

“Yes.”

The word hurt less than Claire expected.

Perhaps because the husband she remembered was already disappearing.

“Bell offered him a choice,” Margaret continued. “Take responsibility when investigators came—or disappear.”

“And Daniel chose to disappear.”

“He had Vanessa.”

“And a baby.”

“Yes.”

Claire stared at the altar.

“Where did I fit?”

Margaret began crying.

“You weren't supposed to be touched.”

Claire laughed sharply.

“I buried my husband.”

“I mean legally.”

“You forged my name.”

“I did not.”

“Someone did.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Margaret shook her head.

“Daniel told me the paperwork protected you.”

“Did you believe him?”

“At first.”

“When did you stop believing him?”

Margaret looked directly at Claire.

“The day after the funeral.”

Claire went still.

“What happened?”

“I found a file.”

Inside were copies of shell-company documents using Claire's identity.

Margaret confronted Daniel.

He told her Bell's people had created them.

He promised they would never be used against Claire.

“Where was Daniel?” Claire asked.

“Wisconsin.”

Three days after his own funeral.

Alive.

Hiding.

Holding Vanessa while Claire slept beside an urn of wedding photographs.

Claire gripped the pew.

“And you stayed silent.”

Margaret wiped tears.

“I had already helped him.”

“So you protected yourself.”

Margaret did not deny it.

That was almost worse.

“Did you receive the stolen money?”

“Some entered the trust.”

“Did you know?”

“Not initially.”

“But you kept it.”

Margaret's silence answered.

Claire stood.

“I'm done.”

“Claire, wait.”

Margaret grabbed her hand.

Claire pulled away.

“What?”

“Daniel doesn't control this.”

“You keep saying things like that.”

“Because you still think he planned everything.”

“Didn't he?”

Margaret looked toward the stained-glass windows.

“Daniel was selfish. Cowardly. Dishonest.”

Claire almost smiled.

“Strong endorsement.”

“But he was never smart enough to build this.”

“Then who was?”

Margaret whispered one name.

“Vanessa.”

Claire stared.

Margaret continued.

“Vanessa handled the accounts. Vanessa knew Bell. Vanessa created the exit plan.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

“She's Daniel's wife?”

Margaret nodded.

Claire's chest tightened.

“Legal wife?”

Another pause.

Then Margaret said, “Yes.”

The church seemed suddenly enormous.

“When did they marry?”

“Four years ago.”

Claire closed her eyes.

One year after Daniel's “death.”

While Claire still wore her wedding ring on a chain beneath her clothes.

Margaret reached for her again.

Claire stepped away.

“One last thing.”

“What?”

“When Daniel left, he took one file from our house.”

Margaret looked confused.

“What file?”

“A red accordion folder from his office.”

Claire remembered it.

Tax documents.

Trust papers.

Things Daniel never let her touch.

“What was in it?”

“I don't know.”

Margaret's face tightened.

“Daniel told me it was insurance.”

“Insurance for what?”

“Against Vanessa.”

Claire's phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

A photograph loaded.

Daniel sitting at a café.

Alone.

Taken that morning.

Below it:

IF YOU WANT THE RED FILE, COME WITHOUT POLICE.

Claire stared.

A second message appeared.

Daniel doesn't know I'm contacting you.

May you like

Then a name.

Vanessa.
