THE TWINS THE KING DIVIDED

Alejandro refused the record.
At first.
Then Eliana confirmed it.
The rebellion began before the twins were born.
Valeria feared two heirs would unite rival factions around Eliana.
So she separated them.
Marena escaped with Isidora.
Alejandro remained.
Valeria placed him with Sofia, who had recently lost a newborn son.
Sofia raised him as her own.
Mateo accepted the lie because an acknowledged prince stabilized the court.
Alejandro stared at Eliana.
“You are my mother.”
“Yes.”
“And Sofia?”
“The woman who loved you.”
Both truths.
His face broke quietly.
No display.
Just breath leaving him.
Isidora looked at her twin.
The same crescent.
The same blood.
The same stolen life divided into different prisons.
The great hall filled before midnight.
Nobles gathered beneath banners of the white stag.
Mateo sat on the throne.
Eliana stood beside it.
Alejandro and Isidora stood together.
Valeria entered under guard but not yet condemned.
She demanded formal trial.
She argued the locket records were forged.
The birth register, she claimed, proved nothing because Eliana’s children had both died.
Isidora was an impostor.
Alejandro an unrelated foundling.
The marks could be painted.
The queen could be another woman.
The court physician examined the birthmarks.
Real.
Old.
Identical.
Still not enough.
Bloodline magic had faded from the realm generations earlier.
Or so people believed.
The royal seal carried one remaining test.
Beneath the throne lay the Crownstone, an ancient white crystal said to respond only to Eliana’s line.
Mateo had never used it.
Valeria opposed the test.
Too late.
Alejandro placed his hand upon the stone.
It glowed faintly.
Isidora touched it.
The entire crystal filled with silver light.
The hall gasped.
Valeria went pale.
Then the stone cracked.
A line split through its center.
From within fell a tiny metal cylinder.
Mateo opened it.
Inside was a final decree written by his father.
If twins bearing the moon mark survive, neither shall rule alone. The elder by breath shall guard the crown. The younger shall guard the realm. If separated by treachery, the throne is forfeit until both consent.
Mateo whispered:
“I never knew.”
Eliana looked at him.
“You never looked.”
The decree meant Mateo’s current authority was invalid once the twins lived and remained divided without consent.
The crown had legally entered regency years earlier.
Valeria had ruled through an illegitimate structure.
Alejandro asked Eliana:
“Which of us was born first?”
She looked at Isidora.
“You.”
Isidora became crown guardian.
Alejandro became protector of the realm.
Neither could rule alone.
Valeria laughed.
“You think paper ends power?”
Then the hall doors opened.
Lord Cassian entered with armed household guards.
He had been absent from court.
Now he carried Marena by the arm.
Alive.
And a knife rested at her throat.
Though no blood was shown, the threat silenced the hall.
Cassian said:
“The princess may have blood.”
May you like
He looked at Mateo.
“But I have the army.”
