Chapter 9 - THE MONEY FROM A DEAD MAN
Robert Carter had been quiet, careful, and conflict-averse.
Daniel remembered his father working constantly.
Olivia told everyone Robert made bad investments before his death.
The family believed most of his savings disappeared.
Daniel had resented that for years.
He thought Sarah’s wealth made the contrast worse.
Now records showed Robert once controlled nearly five million dollars in private investments.
After his death, the assets moved through two trusts.
One eventually funded Northline.
Olivia had not been poor.
She had hidden wealth while letting Sarah pay for her apartment, travel, food, and family expenses.
Sarah did not know whether to laugh or scream.
“Why?”
Daniel answered before anyone else.
“Because if we thought Mom had money, we would stop needing her.”
Sarah looked at him.
Olivia’s control had never depended only on money.
It depended on presenting herself as someone who needed protecting.
Robert’s old attorney was still alive.

He agreed to meet Daniel and Sarah.

Martin objected.

“Why?” Sarah asked.

“Because Olivia brought him a letter.”
The letter claimed Daniel had gambling debts.
Ashley had drug problems.

Daniel demanded a DNA test.
Sarah initially did not understand.
“Why?”

Daniel stared at the report.

Robert never made it to the meeting.
He died at home.
