Chapter 11 - THE VIDEO

The camera had recorded everything.
Melanie, their twenty-one-year-old cousin, nearly dropped her phone when Claire called asking about the dining-room livestream archive. She still had access through the family account.
“Why?” Melanie asked nervously.
“Because Caleb assaulted Emily in front of all of you.”
The silence on the line was its own confession.
Melanie sent the file within fifteen minutes.
Claire, Emily, and Grayson watched it together in his sitting room.
There it was.
Emily entering the dining room with the tray.
Caleb standing.
The first strike.
The second.
The laughter.
Claire bursting through the door.
The strap ripped from Caleb’s hand.
Emily clinging to Claire behind her.
Emily had to look away halfway through.
Grayson didn’t.
When the video ended, he removed his glasses slowly.
“That,” he said, “is more than enough.”
Claire called the police and their attorney before noon.
By afternoon, Caleb knew something was happening. He began texting Emily repeatedly:
You are blowing up your own future.
Think carefully.
You live in my house.
If you turn family into a legal matter, you get nothing.
Claire saved every message.
Then the title company called.
Not because Claire contacted them.
Because a closing had been scheduled on the Carter house for January third, and someone from Caleb’s office had filed a power of attorney claiming Emily had authorized him to sign on her behalf if she was “emotionally unavailable.”
Claire nearly dropped the phone.
“Emotionally unavailable?” she repeated.
The title officer sounded deeply uncomfortable. “We wanted to verify because the language seemed unusual.”
It was a forged power of attorney.
Another layer.
Another fraud.
When Claire told Emily, her sister simply sat down at the kitchen table and stared.
“He was going to sell the house,” Emily said blankly.
“Yes.”
“And he thought I’d never know?”
Claire looked at the stack of evidence now spread across the table:
the trust amendment,
the ledger,
Kevin’s voicemail copy,
the deleted email printouts,
the Christmas video,
and now the false power-of-attorney notice.
“He thought you wouldn’t fight him,” Claire said.
Emily lifted her head slowly.
Something in her face had changed.
Not healed.
Hardened.
“I’m done being scared of him,” she said.
That night, as snow started falling outside, Claire heard a sound from the porch.
She opened the front door.
No one was there.
Only a brown padded envelope sitting on the mat.
Inside was a flash drive and one sticky note in cramped handwriting:
She knew this day would come.
Play the file named DECEMBER 24.
There was no name.
No return address.
Claire turned the flash drive over in her hand.
May you like
And suddenly she wasn’t only asking how to stop Caleb.
She was asking who had been helping them from the shadows.
