Chapter 1 - THE GLASS ON THE TABLE

Vanessa Carter had one hand around Nora’s shoulder and the other wrapped around a glass when Ethan pushed open the kitchen door.
“Drink it!”
Six-year-old Nora twisted hard in her chair.
“No! I don’t want it!”
Vanessa caught the child lightly under the chin and pushed the glass toward her lips again.
Nora jerked away.
The cloudy juice struck the edge of the table and spilled across the placemat.
That was the moment Ethan understood what he was seeing.
“Get away from her!”
Vanessa released Nora instantly.
Ethan crossed the kitchen, pulled his daughter behind him, grabbed the glass, and slammed it down on the table.
“What is this?”
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“It’s juice.”
Nora was crying into the back of Ethan’s shirt.
“No,” she whispered. “She put the drops in.”
Vanessa snapped, “Nora!”
Ethan turned.
His anger flashed hotter.
He stepped toward Vanessa and slapped her once across the face.
She staggered backward, stunned.
“Don’t touch her again.”
Then Ethan planted himself between his wife and daughter.
“You waited until I left—”
Vanessa stared at him.
“—to hurt my daughter?!”
“I wasn’t hurting her.”
“You were forcing something into her mouth.”
“She didn’t even swallow it!”
Ethan froze.
That was not the defense Vanessa seemed to think it was.
He picked up the glass carefully and moved it away from Nora.
“What did you put in it?”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Nothing dangerous.”
“What?”
“It was part of a routine.”
“What routine?”
Vanessa looked at Nora instead of answering.
Nora clutched Ethan’s shirt tighter.
“Daddy,” she whispered, “Mommy Vanessa said if I didn’t drink it, she’d write down that I failed again.”
Ethan slowly looked back at his wife.
“Write down where?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Ethan noticed a black notebook half-hidden beneath a stack of mail on the kitchen counter.
He opened it.
The first page read:
NORA CARTER — HOME COMPLIANCE TRIAL
WEEK 6.
Underneath were columns:
REFUSAL.
CRYING.
LATENCY.
COMPLETION.
PARENT INTERVENTION.
Ethan stared.
“What the hell is this?”
Vanessa moved toward the notebook.
He pulled it away.
Then a folded sheet slipped from between the pages.
At the top was a logo Ethan had never seen before.
BRIGHTPATH FAMILY SYSTEMS.
Under it:
PILOT CASE: NORA C.
And at the bottom:
PRIMARY PARENT CONSENT — VERIFIED.
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
“I never consented to this.”
Vanessa whispered:
May you like
“You weren’t supposed to find it today.”
That was when Ethan realized the glass was only one piece of something much larger.
