Chapter 8 - MEGAN'S ACCOUNT
Megan Carter, Ethan’s younger sister, immediately admitted downloading the video.
“I was trying to help.”
Ethan nearly laughed.
Everyone was helping.
That had become the most dangerous sentence in his life.
Megan explained that Vanessa called her two months earlier and asked:
“Am I too strict with Nora?”
Megan said:
“Sometimes.”
Vanessa cried.
She sent Megan access to the consultant forum.
“Watch the clips and tell me if I’m crazy.”
Megan watched.
Downloaded one because she wanted to show Ethan.
Then she stopped.
Why?
Because she knew Ethan would explode.
There it was again.
Expected reaction.
Silence.
“Did you know Vanessa forced things toward Nora?”
“No.”
“Did you know about the drink?”
“No.”
“Did you know the videos were being used commercially?”
“I thought it was training.”
Megan cried.
“I should have told you.”
“Yes.”
No reassurance.
No cruelty.
Just yes.
Then Megan gave Ethan something.
A saved voice message from Vanessa.
Sent six weeks earlier.
“I can’t keep doing this,” Vanessa said. “Nora hates me. Ethan thinks I’m mean. BrightPath says the data proves consistency works, but every day feels worse.”
Ethan listened twice.
Vanessa had known the system was failing emotionally while the numbers improved.
That mattered.
She was not blindly convinced.
She had doubts.
She ignored them.
Then Megan said:
“There’s another message.”
Vanessa, crying:
“Sophie says if I quit now, Ethan will see that I’m the problem.”
That sentence exposed Sophie’s leverage.
She was no longer merely giving bad advice.
She was tying Vanessa’s self-worth to completing the pilot.
Ethan turned over all messages to BrightPath and law enforcement.
Vanessa’s attorney did the same.
Then Nora’s therapist asked Ethan a question:
“Does Nora know Vanessa may not come home soon?”
“No.”
“What have you told her?”
“That adults are figuring things out.”
“Good. What does she want?”
Ethan realized he had not asked directly.
That evening he sat beside Nora on the couch.
“Do you want to see Vanessa?”
Nora played with a stuffed rabbit.
“Not in the kitchen.”
“Okay.”
“Can I see her at Grandma Megan’s?”
Ethan felt tension in his chest.
“You want Megan there?”
“Yes.”
Not:
never.
Not:
yes.
A condition.
They arranged a supervised family visit later through professionals.
Then Nora asked:
“Is Vanessa mad because I didn’t drink?”
“No.”
“Is Daddy mad because I cried?”
“No.”
Nora looked at him.
“Then why did everybody write it down?”
Ethan had no answer.
The next morning, BrightPath sent the Carter family’s complete pilot archive.
At the bottom was a file Ethan had never seen:
ETHAN RETURN-HOME RESPONSE PLAN.
It described exactly how Vanessa should behave when Ethan came home during a conflict.
And one instruction had been highlighted:
DO NOT ALLOW THE CHILD TO RECRUIT THE SECOND PARENT.
Ethan stared.
BrightPath denied writing that instruction.
So who had?
