Chapter 5 - THE SON AT THE SAFE
Daniel denied authorizing the transfers.
Vanessa denied knowing Margaret had an investment account.
Each blamed a bookkeeper who had disappeared after VDH Residential missed payroll.
The brokerage records told a different story. Authorization codes were sent to Daniel's phone. Security questions were answered with details only family knew. A certified copy of the old power of attorney had been uploaded from the IP address at Margaret's house.
The original certified copy was missing from Henry's locked file cabinet.
Daniel knew the combination.
So did Margaret.
Vanessa used that fact immediately. She suggested Margaret removed the document herself during a confused episode and later blamed her son.
Online, Vanessa published a photograph of Margaret's bloodstained blouse beside the caption: Mental illness harms entire families. She described the plate as an accident and herself as the victim of an elderly woman's paranoia.
Daniel said nothing publicly.
His silence served Vanessa again.
Claire obtained the house security archive. Someone had disabled the library camera the night the power of attorney disappeared, but the hallway sensor remained active. At 1:42 a.m., Daniel's access code opened Henry's file room.
He stayed inside for nineteen minutes.
When he emerged, he carried a blue document envelope beneath his jacket.
Margaret watched the footage alone.
The boy she raised had once confessed to breaking a lamp before she noticed it was missing. She had praised his honesty so warmly that he cried.
Now he had entered his dead father's files in darkness and carried out the document used to steal $684,000.
At the end of the recording, Daniel paused beneath the camera.
Vanessa stepped from the shadows.
He handed her the envelope.
Then he kissed her.
The kiss changed the meaning of every excuse Daniel later offered. He was not a frightened son discovering a crime after it occurred. He had shared the secrecy, the timing, and the relief of success.
The stolen money had paid more than business debts. Forty-six thousand dollars funded Vanessa's jewelry and travel. Daniel used seventy thousand to settle a personal tax lien. Another hundred thousand vanished into cash withdrawals.
Margaret had paid Daniel's college tuition, first apartment deposit, wedding expenses, and two failed business loans. She had called each rescue temporary because naming the pattern would have required changing it.
The theft was new.
