Chapter 6 - THE INHERITANCE OF A LIVING WOMAN
Margaret confronted Daniel in Claire's conference room with both attorneys present.
He watched the security footage without expression.
“Vanessa told me you agreed to help,” he said.
“Why enter the room at two in the morning?”
“You were asleep.”
“Why hide the envelope?”
“I knew you'd become emotional.”
Margaret almost laughed.
“You stole in darkness to protect me from emotion?”
Daniel's face hardened. “Dad promised me the company and this house.”
“Your father left you forty percent of the company. You sold it.”
“Because you refused to let me run it.”
“The board refused after you concealed losses.”
“You turned them against me.”
At last, the grievance beneath the fraud appeared. Daniel believed Margaret had stolen the future Henry intended for him. Every dollar he took felt like correction.
Henry had not been blameless in creating that belief. He spoke proudly of building “something for Daniel” and avoided correcting their son when ambition became entitlement. In private, however, Henry insisted Margaret remain fully protected and refused to guarantee Daniel control of the company.
After Henry died, Daniel remembered the promises and discarded the conditions.
Margaret had done something similar. She remembered the boy who defended bullied classmates and ignored the man who manipulated employees. Memory became another inheritance she edited on his behalf.
“Your father loved you,” she said. “He did not promise you freedom from judgment.”
Daniel looked away. “He isn't here to say that.”
“No. Which is why you have found him so useful.”
“You are spending an inheritance from a woman who is alive,” Margaret said.
“You don't need four million dollars in a house.”
“Need is not ownership.”
Daniel leaned forward. “If you testify against me, you will lose your only son.”
Margaret's eyes filled.
“I lost him before the plate broke.”
The next morning, Vanessa released an edited recording of the meeting. It omitted the stolen document and began with Margaret saying she had lost her son. Commentators called her cold and vindictive.
Owen Pike filed a civil complaint alleging Margaret fabricated the assault to avoid commitments she had made to VDH Residential. A former housekeeper submitted an affidavit claiming Margaret had become aggressive.
The housekeeper, Rosa Delgado, called Margaret privately that night.
“Mrs. Hale, I am sorry,” she said. “Vanessa threatened my immigration sponsorship for my niece. I signed what her lawyer wrote.”
Rosa agreed to correct the statement, but fear made her uncertain about appearing publicly.
Vanessa understood how to make every witness pay before telling the truth.
Then Daniel received an anonymous audio file.
He brought it to Claire without telling Vanessa.
In the recording, Vanessa spoke to VDH's lender.
“Daniel's signatures are everywhere. When this collapses, he takes the theft charges. Once Margaret is in a facility and the loan funds, I transfer my share offshore and file for divorce.”
The lender asked, “What if Daniel cooperates?”
Vanessa laughed.
“He'd rather go to prison than admit his mother was right about me.”

For the first time, the woman he had chosen over his mother had made him feel what Margaret felt in the kitchen.
