Chapter 2 - THE GLASS SHE NEVER DRANK

“Because I never drank your champagne,” Evelyn said.
Three hours earlier, a banquet server had warned her that Vanessa personally changed the seating chart and insisted Evelyn receive a glass from a separate tray. Evelyn switched it with an untouched glass, then pretended to sip.
Her collapse had been a performance.
The mist was real, but not dangerous. Two days earlier, Evelyn’s security consultant found an unauthorized canister connected to the ballroom ventilation system. Investigators replaced it with theatrical haze and installed sealed samplers. Vanessa believed the original compound remained in place.
“You knew?” Roland whispered.
“I knew someone planned to declare me medically incapacitated during tonight’s board session,” Evelyn said. “I wanted to learn who.”
Vanessa recovered quickly. “You staged a collapse, trapped the board, and filled the ballroom with gas. She did this—not me.”
Several directors hesitated.
Roland had pressed the lock control, but the access log showed the instruction originated from Evelyn’s executive credentials. The ballroom’s cameras had gone offline eleven minutes before her collapse. To anyone reviewing the system, Evelyn appeared to have created the entire crisis.
Vanessa held up a binder containing signed board consents. They invoked the company’s emergency succession clause and appointed her interim CEO if Evelyn became unable to serve.
Nine directors’ signatures appeared on the pages.
Four directors immediately denied signing.
Before Evelyn could examine them, the doors unlocked automatically. Police, paramedics, and federal agents entered. Someone had reported a hazardous release before the gala began.
Vanessa allowed officers to escort her away from the mist while telling them her mother had suffered a paranoid breakdown.
Roland remained beside the control panel, shaking.
In his pocket, investigators found a second access card encoded with Evelyn’s executive credentials.
He claimed Evelyn had given it to him.
Then laboratory technicians examined the untouched champagne glass.

It contained a powerful sedative.
Only Evelyn’s fingerprints were on the stem.
