Chapter 5 - THE CHAIRMAN’S TWO STORIES
Evelyn remembered the conversation.
She had urged Roland to disclose the Ashford files with her before Vanessa found fragments without context. Roland edited out everything except her warning.
The full recording no longer existed on his phone.
Roland had played both sides. He helped Vanessa design the succession coup while telling Evelyn he wanted a joint confession. If Vanessa succeeded, he would remain chairman. If Evelyn survived, he would present himself as the frightened accomplice who followed the daughter’s orders.
Investigators traced the unauthorized ventilation canister to ClearSpan Response, a shell company formed six weeks earlier. Its owner was hidden behind two trusts. The original invoice described the contents only as an emergency-training compound.
Vanessa insisted she believed it was harmless theatrical mist.
Aaron contradicted her. He produced a message in which she asked whether “the dose would keep Mother down for at least forty minutes.”
Vanessa said Aaron fabricated it.
Forensic analysis found no alteration, but the message alone could not prove what substance she expected.
Evelyn’s security team located the removed canister in a police evidence locker. It did contain a sedating compound—but the chain of custody was compromised. A contractor had handled it without logging the transfer, allowing Vanessa’s lawyers to argue someone planted it after the gala.
Meanwhile, the Ashford review uncovered a payment from Merrick Systems to Daniel’s private account two days before his death. Roland claimed Daniel accepted money to stay silent about the valves.
Vanessa believed it.
Evelyn did not.
Daniel had left her a voicemail the night before the accident: “I moved the money where Roland can’t reach it. If anything happens, follow the scholarship names.”
Evelyn had dismissed the words as stress and grief. Now auditors examined the account.
Daniel had not taken a bribe.
