Chapter 5 - TESSA'S SECOND STORY
Tessa broke down during the second interview.
“Yes. I knew the code.”
“From Coach?”
“No. Brooke.”
Brooke had memorized Coach Ellis’s keypad code and shared it with several seniors for “emergency equipment access.”
Coach Ellis had no idea.
“Did you lock Maya in?” Claire asked.
Tessa shook her head violently.
“No.”
“Did you give someone the code?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
“Who?”
“Kayla.”
Kayla Reed, senior flyer.
Why?
Because Kayla told Tessa Maya had taken something from Coach Ellis’s office and they needed to “hold her” until Brooke arrived.
Tessa thought:
five minutes.
Scare her.
Get the paper back.
She sent the code.
Then panicked.
She did not go to the hallway.
She did not tell an adult.
That silence trapped Maya longer.
“Who put her inside?” Harris asked.
Tessa whispered:
“Kayla and Jenna.”
Both girls denied physically forcing Maya into the closet.
Then hallway camera footage showed the sequence.
Maya entered the equipment area voluntarily.
Kayla stood near the door.
Jenna said something.
Maya stepped into the closet.
Kayla shut the door.
Jenna entered the keypad code.
They laughed.
Then walked away.
Maya was inside twenty-three minutes.
No dramatic assault.
No physical dragging.
Still deliberate confinement.
Claire watched the footage once.
Maya refused.
The school suspended Kayla and Jenna immediately pending discipline.
Brooke was removed from captain duties during investigation.
Then Claire asked:
“Why did Maya step into the closet?”
No audio.
Maya answered.
“Jenna said the old forms were in the back cabinet.”
A trap.
Then Maya remembered something else.
She found no papers in the closet.
But she saw a blue duffel bag.
Inside:
two old school iPads,
printed forms,
team badges,
and a portable label printer.
Principal Harris froze.
“What happened to the bag?”
“When the door opened, it was gone.”
Claire looked at Harris.
Someone had removed evidence while Maya was locked inside.
Who?
Hallway footage showed no one entering after Kayla and Jenna left.
Then the custodian checked the closet layout.
A second internal door connected the equipment closet to a narrow storage cage used by athletics.
Locked separately.
Maya had not noticed it in the dark.
The athletics cage opened from the gym side.
Someone could have taken the bag without appearing in the hallway.
Access log:
3:52 p.m.
Athletics cage opened.
Badge used:
ASSISTANT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR — PAUL GRANT.
Principal Harris stared at the report.
Paul Grant was the administrator supervising cheer.

He had told Harris he knew nothing about the incident.
Now his badge had opened the connected cage eleven minutes after Maya was locked inside.
