Chapter 6 - THE WAR HE THOUGHT HE COULD STILL WIN

Ethan was not arrested that first night.

That infuriated Victoria.

It also taught her the next lesson of betrayal:

the law moves slower than pain.

He was held for questioning, then released under strict advice not to contact Hale staff or access company systems.

By noon the next day, his attorney had already sent a letter accusing Victoria of reckless endangerment for “weaponizing an aircraft in a domestic confrontation.”

By three, a gossip site had published a blurred photograph of the helicopter on the road and the headline:

AVIATION HEIRESS HUNTS CHEATING HUSBAND FROM THE SKY.

Victoria read it once and closed the browser.

Celeste didn’t.

“Actually, this helps,” she said.

Victoria stared.

“How?”

“It makes him look pathetic.”

Jonah added, “And if he pushes too hard on the helicopter, discovery opens everything.”

Still, the board was nervous.

A special meeting was called.

Some members were sympathetic.

Others were cautious in that bloodless corporate way people become cautious only when scandal might splash on them too.

Victoria entered the boardroom in a black suit, hair tied back, no apology visible anywhere on her face.

One older director cleared his throat.

“Victoria, before we proceed, we need to address the optics of last night.”

She looked straight at him.

“Then let’s do that honestly.”

The room fell silent.

“Yes, I flew after my husband. No, I did not intend physical harm. I intended to stop two people transporting stolen records and trust-linked financial documents off my property. Deputies found exactly what I said they would find.”

No one interrupted.

She continued.

“If your deepest concern today is my altitude over a private road and not the attempt to empty my mother’s trust and frame me as unstable, then you are not serving this board—you are serving male comfort.”

Nobody breathed for one full second.

Jonah almost smiled.

Then Victoria did something smarter than anger.

She handed out copies.

Transfer plans.

Forged narrative drafts.

Media statements.

The “emotional instability” strategy.

Financial movement maps.

By the time the meeting ended, the board had:

suspended Ethan from all company roles,

authorized full forensic audit,

given Celeste litigation authority,

and approved emergency protective measures over Marian Hale Trust assets.

That should have been victory.

It wasn’t.

Because war does not end when the liar is exposed.

It changes terrain.

That evening, Sophie called Victoria from a hotel where Celeste had temporarily placed her to keep her from talking to Ethan.

“He wants me to sign a statement,” Sophie said.

“What statement?”

“That you’ve been unstable for months. That you were drinking before the flight. That you’ve threatened him before.”

Victoria leaned back slowly.

There it was.

The backup plan.

“He sent that to you?”

“Yes.”

“Do you have it?”

“Yes.”

“Forward it to Celeste.”

A pause.

Then Sophie said in a tiny voice, “He told me if I stayed loyal, he’d still protect me.”

Victoria almost pitied her.

“Ethan doesn’t protect women,” she said. “He positions them.”
